The moment Wafer showed he was better, Morey shouldve traded him for something. It couldve been williams from nj, Booth or Carney from Minny, someone. Oh well, i never understood a 6'3 sg that cant get his own shot anyway.
Joe Smith never got released. And I doubt we sign anyone. They'd have to sign tonight to be eligible for the playoffs so if we didnt sign anyone tonight and did later, it'd be pointless sorta. Only to help us for the next 25 games. I think we just did Luther a favor and arent looking at anyone.
Ironic that Von Wafer is the guy who essentially took his spot, they were in the same draft and Von was selected 39th overall (Luther 24th overall). CD's last draft pick before Daryl came on as assistant GM. CD, I luv ya guy but I'm glad you're not making personnel moves anymore.
The weird thing to me though, is the deadline for playoff rosters is tomorrow. If a team wanted to pick him up as an extra playoff piece (unlikely, but still), they would have to claim him off waivers, and use their exception to pay his salary. Not gonna happen for a guy like Luther. Why would any of those teams do that? Luther just didn't have much value because he makes too much money. At this point, he's a spot up 3 point shooter -- Novak costs half as much, is taller, and a better shooter and all we got for him was an option to trade picks.
Actually, I believe the player has to be released by 3/1 to be eligible for playoffs, they can be signed after 3/1, as long as they are released before 3/1. Can anyone verify?
I'm not 100% sure, but that sounds right. Last season, Brent Barry was traded around the deadline. After being released right away, he waited 30 days (which would be after 3/1) before he resigned with the Spurs.
IIRC Head was on the injury list right around the trade deadline, so Morey couldn't have traded him even if he had wanted to. Good luck, Luther. Hope some team gives you the minutes you deserve.
I have a hard time believing somebody like Sefolosha nets a first-rounder yet we can't get anything for Luther. Oh well, i'm sure Morey tried everything possible to try deal him for at leastsomething. I agree it's a classy move to release him in time for him to possibly sign with a playoff team and/or work up his value somewhat in a contract year. Hopefully, we'll use this remaining roster spot to add another guard for depth purposes. Jason Hart would be a solid addition. Not sure on Cassell but I suppose he could work too. Maybe send a feeler out to the Shaun Livingston camp.
Luther handled the situation like a real pro. Joe Smith was the first guy I thought of when I knew Luther got cut. We could use another combo guard though.
This is basically what I said, and I pretty sure its right, but if anyone can confirm it, then please do so. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/ian_thomsen/02/19/trade.deadline/index.html So if we want someone for the playoffs they have to be signed by tonight/tomorrow to be eligible. Still, unlikely. Just giving Luther a chance to perhaps sign somewhere.
He helped us beat San Antonio when T-slack was out, he did contribute to a crucial win against a division rival.
Damn, I know Morey was trying like hell to trade him. Dropping a guy and not getting anything back irks me, hope someone picks him up but it might not happen since no one wanted him in a deal. You guys realize tomorrow is March 1, he better have a prearranged deal waiting or it ain't happening.
Someone will pick him up. Luther can shoot, has above average atheleticism. Poor piss ball handling, dribbling, pass skills for even a SG. (Can't play PG unless you want team suicide).
