The contempt charges were passed as part of the ongoing attempt to get to the bottom of the US Atty mess- and ultimately rid DOJ of the inept, incompetent, poisonous tenure of Gonzo & co. Now, you could say that view is just partisan posturing - but it's not. In fact it's the exact opposite. The view that Gonzo and his gang have wrecked DOJ and hurt his effectiveness has been expressed not just as a matter of opinion but as sworn testimony by Republican-appointed, super straight arrow US Atty's, joined by numerous Republican senators and former admin officials, and, in the context of Gonzo's torture plan as WHC, by a number of generals and intel officials. The issue of Gonzo and the ruination of DOJ is a bipartisan one, and listing the litany of offenses isn't really even necessary to me at this point.

I'd consider it a failure of their basic obligation to the American public to not pursue their oversight as vigorously as possible. The White House created ths mess by 1. running an inept DOJ full of hacks and 2. now trying to cover it up. ANd they turn around and blame the Democrats for uncovering it?

Second, where are all those so-called strict constructionist, limited government conservatives on this one? You know, the kinds of judges Bush has always expressd an affinity for and the kind that Rudy & Mitt & the gang of other pretenders like to wax poetic about.

Bush & the Republican parties preference for "strict construction" and "original intent" is absolutely, diametrically opposed to the Hyper-expansive macro-encompassing view of imperial executive power that that BUsh & Tricky Dick have encouraged. I cannot think of anything more couterproductive to such a goal.

Couldn't agree more. Anyone who knows US history should know that the Founding Fathers were very leery of the idea of power being concentrated in the hands of the Executive.
