    Contender does not equal favorite.

That is my entire point...I think both that team and this one are contenders.

The '93 team was a bit more of a contender...top 4, probably, than this one, top 7...but still both a contender, IMO.

    just remembered...

the Chronicle did a preseaon special for the beginning of the NBA on Halloween in 1993...i remember it had a jack o'lantern on the cover.

they picked the Rockets to beat the Knicks in the 94 championship.

i can't imagine a publication picking THIS rockets bunch winning a championship...and i think this illustrates, we didn't come out of nowhere in 1994 like this bunch would have to coming off a lottery season.

Big boy sums up his basketball analysis nicely.

It all depends on whether something is a favorite of his or not.

Reality has no bearing on the issue.

nope, it sure doesn't! we started that season with a bang(15-0) (22-1) + the best player in basketball & ended up with the best record in the NBA after Seattle. i make no apologies for being a homer but after Deke took out our nemesis that made us absolute favorites in my mind.

to this day i'm surprised the Knicks took us to 7 games. ;)

and no, imo, our current team doesn't match chances wise ... in fact the comparison is unfortunate, but the eternal fan in me is always hopeful.

    We are already rebuilding....

What are we going to do? Trade away all our developing young players for developing young players??

We are rebuilding until we can package a few of our good pieces for one great piece.

if youre not contending/favorites, why compete?

build until you get to a point where you are contending.

if i had a 2% chance of beating brock lesnar, i'd go back to the gym and work harder until it's higher. no point in getting beat senseless

Not saying that at all but Max is right here about the Lakers. In fact, that's their one true weakness - that they believe they are so good they can turn their effort on and off at will. It leads them to play very lazy at times and not take the other team seriously. That's why a team like the Rockets can keep it close with them (Lakers) on those nights where their hearts (and heads) aren't in the game (which happened in their 2nd round playoff series). But (and this is a significant but) when the crunch time comes and it's time to kick things up a notch, they have the players in Gasol, Kobe & Fisher who can take things to that higher level while the Rockets don't have those types of players on this roster. What this means is that there is a ceiling to how far the Rockets can acsend and that ceiling is below that for a team like the Lakers.

The Rockets can use a little help, but they are fine. I like this team and if Yao stays healthy look for a nice run into the playoffs!

when you have a superstar player, you always have a chance.

we don't have one so our chances are slim. but you still play of course, but i don't think we're going to win the championship next year.

now if you saw morey is able to pull of a trade for paul or a superstar, then I BELIEVE!

stars rule the league. and morey is trying to deliver. so let's all pray!!!

I look at the league in 4 yr windows. Within that 4 yr window, how old and how good are you're top 2 or 3 players? Right now with yao, the rockets are in the wrong window. As a team, you can rebuild and contend for a playoffs. The rox contended for a spot last year and if we wouldnt have had chuck hayes at center, they could've squeeked in. This is why i think they should trade yao.

People get my desire to trade yao confused with not liking him. I think yao is a good, not great player and an even better person, but he is too needy and injury prone to continue this charade. He's like drew bledsoe in which too many things have to be right in order fot him to be effective. He's great at clogging the lane, very good against guys right in front of him, very good when receiving the ball in certain spot, and an excellent defender. He's good enough to make you believe that you can contend with him,but he has enoughs to say you cant unless he's a 3rd or 4th option and i didnt even factor the age and injuries. The rockets need to get into the ok,port, utah window vs trying to stay in this one.The young players and aqdelman are good enough to keep this team in the playoff chase while still developing even without yao.

I will try not to figure what dd is saying, but when he uses brooks, i think he saying in terms of taking and making big shots late in the game. Kinda like chauncey who was deemed mr. big shot or guys like maxwell who did the same.
