Would depend on who my current starter is. If its Matt Schaub? No thank you. If Its David Carr? Yes, Please!
I will forgive you this comment as a fellow 99er. I'd take Major Applewhite, Chance Mock, or Colt McCoy over Simms. So overhyped.
let's not go overboard here. Those dudes can't throw a ball more than 20 yards down the field without the ducks following it. I have to say Simms did have Roy Williams and all he had to do was chuck the ball 50 yards, but at least he can chuck the ball 50 yards.
And that man is now ironically one of the coaches on the Texans offensive staff! My take, as a UT grad who was there for the duration of the Chris Simms era at Texas: he was never as good as he was supposed to be, but he wasn't nearly as bad as people make him out to be. He definitely had all the physical tools one would want in a QB, but he had a horrible habit of locking onto receivers and telegraphing his throws. Not sure if that's something you can improve on with development or not. He never b****ed, whined, or complained, which is commendable. But, he still took (takes?) and immense amount of **** from people. I'll be the first to admit that thinking about the UT-CU Big 12 championship game makes me sick to think about! I think he's young enough to still deserve a look, and a shot at the starting spot on same teams, including Chicago, San Francisco, or perhaps Minnesota. If nothing else, i wish he'd get his release so he could try to find a good fit out there somewhere without missing all of camp.
I met Chris Simms once. He was a dick. Always liked Applewhite better. Wouldn't wish that spleen injury on anyone though.
i saw simms play at ut. he could throw a laser beam. seemed to lack charisma and heart. applewhite had the charisma and heart, but didnt have the physical tools. i think its a toss up between simms and carr. simms gets the nob bc he had 1 good season down in tampa before his spleen exploded.
When I think back about the Simms years, I remember: 1) The real Roy Williams aka Superman blowing up Simms in the end zone. 2) Simms causing 4 turnovers in the first half vs. CU in the Big 12 championship. 3) And how could I forget? Taking a knee at midfield to end the first half against OU. Darn wind. 4) Interceptions, interceptions, fumbles, interceptions. 5) Arriving in a limo.
