I would...if SAR were a decided upgrade. Therefore, no -- and since Po'land would not consider it this is a moot question.
No. SAR is a loser, no way do I want that. Good players on bad teams look a lot better than they are.
Anyone that thinks that Portland wants: Randolph soon to be making the Max or near the Max Howard who has 5 years and 30+ million left on his deal MoTay who has 3 years and 27 million left on his deal clogging up their PF position is fooling themself.
No reason what-so-ever for Portland to even look twice at this deal, but if for some reason they did: yes we should do this deal. Anybody that thinks Howard or Taylor are as good as SAR are clueless. SAR isn't a leader and isn't as good as some once thought he was, but he's better than Howard or Taylor.
HELL YES. Reef is the youngest of the three and last year as a starter averaged 20 points and 9 boards on 49% shooting. Neither Taylor nor Howard have ever averaged 20 and 9 in their careers. Not to mention the fact that Reef has the higest FG%, 3pt%, and FT% of the bunch. Instead of three average to below average PFs, we can have 1 below average PF and 1 good PF.
No. For all of the reasons already mentioned plus cap room doesn't mean squat. Especially when it only exists as a figment of someone's imagination.... Tracy McGrady....$15,694,250 SPOON.................$6,353,200 Yao Ming...............$5,594,907 Eric Piatkowski......$2,950,200 Jimmy Jackson.......$2,700,000 Bostjan Nachbar....$2,290,118 Reece Gaines.........$1,296,800 Subt......................$36,879,475 Est. Sura/Ward.......$4,500,000 Total.......................$41,379,475 On a salary cap of $45m, we've now have a whopping $3,620,525. Less than the MLE.
NO! shareef is a soft, offensive-minded power forward, who plays like a small forward. this isn't what the rockets need. we need defensive-minded power players who can defend and rebound and only shoot if within 5 feet of the basket.
Is Howard really all that much worse than SAR? He knows how to put up good #'s on a bad team as well.
Personally, I think we are set on everything but the backup 5. Whoever we pick up for that duty has to be the last move before training camp. We are less than 2 months away and the coaches need to start planning how everyone is going to fit in. I think that the JHow and MoT combination could be one of the best rotations at 4 in the league. If Deke is the backup 5, then our entire frontcourt could easily be the best rotation in the league. We need to stand pat and let JVG plan for this crew unless something REALLY good comes along. IMO, Reef is not the answer at 4 when we only have Spoon to back him up.
Yes, I would do the trade just because Shareef has higher trade value than both Taylor and Howard. We can try SAR out for half a season and if he works out, great, we can resign him after the season. If he doesn't work out, we can always trade him mid-season for teams looking for cap space or in need of a star power forward. We would certainly be able to get more for him than we would Howard or Taylor. But I don't see any reason Portland would trade SAR for Howard and Taylor.
Obviously they won't trade Reef for Howard and MoT... But you have to ask yourself, do Portland really want to win? If they do, I have the perfect deal for them to get them two very talented players: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Houston trades: SG Adrian Griffin (0.6 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 0.5 apg in 7.0 minutes) PG Tyronn Lue (10.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 4.2 apg in 30.7 minutes) PF Maurice Taylor (11.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 1.4 apg in 27.8 minutes) SF Eric Piatkowski (4.1 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 0.5 apg in 14.3 minutes) Houston receives: PF Shareef Abdur-Rahim (16.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.0 apg in 31.6 minutes) Change in team outlook: -10.4 ppg, -2.6 rpg, and -4.6 apg. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Boston trades: SF Ricky Davis (14.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.3 apg in 31.3 minutes) Boston receives: SG Adrian Griffin (0.6 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 0.5 apg in 19 games) PG Tyronn Lue (10.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 4.2 apg in 76 games) SF Eric Piatkowski (4.1 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 0.5 apg in 49 games) Change in team outlook: +0.8 ppg, +0.5 rpg, and +1.9 apg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Portland trades: PF Shareef Abdur-Rahim (16.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.0 apg in 31.6 minutes) Portland receives: PF Maurice Taylor (11.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 1.4 apg in 75 games) SF Ricky Davis (14.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.3 apg in 79 games) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Houston gets SAR (salary dump, damn good player for one year). - Boston dumps more salary, although a draft pick may be needed from Houston . - Portland become a damn good team with these two additions. They are paying big bucks for these two, but they're paying for talent.. Ratliff/Stepania/Przybilla Randolph/MoT Miles (if they sign him)/Derek Anderson/Ricky Davis Derek Andersno/Ricky Davis/NVE/Frahm Stoudamire/NVE/Telfair Extremely deep, talented, athletic team. Superb bench, great experience.. I think these guys can grab 5th or 6th seed... Ofcourse, all this is assuming Portland WANTS to win and NOT dump salary....
neither of these players are what Portland would consider good character guys. No way they take both much less one.
If I were Portland I would do it. You get a smoker to add to the roster and a laid back Fab-fiver. No more complaining, just playing ball. If I were Houston I'd say no. It is possible to have too many stars on a team. We need players that know their roles. (I'm Houston by the way, so no)
Howard matches his numbers pretty closely in many catagories, has more playoff experience and seems to handle his role better. SAR wears 33 and plays for portland: Another bad omen for rockets fans.
You mean like NVE? Or how about their star player Zach Randolph? What about Qyntel Woods, who makes peanuts and is easily tradeable? Portland just wanted to make their statement that they're cleaning up, and they did it, it's over. No team in the league has a "clean" roster filled with good character guys. Ricky Davis and MoT are very talented players, and talent doesn't come without strings attached in this league. Just like Detroit took a chance with Rasheed, Sacramento took a chance on Webber, Miami took a chance on Odom... If Portland are indeed interested in winning, they would do it without worrying about the past. However, if they aren't, they will use the character as an excuse for not using any more money.
I wouldn't want to trade Mo and Howard for Shareff. He is not that good of a player. I wouldn't want to end up like the lakers and have too many stars who all want the ball. We all-ready have T-mac and Yao on our team we dont need anymore stars. I dont think Portland would take the deal anyway. False hope, just like the J-kidd trade proposed earlier.
