Considering that Rubio can't shoot, he can't score, he has no shooting range. He cannot score, nor shoot even though he is left unguarded every game by the other team. Rubio cannot keep opposing Euroleague point guards in front of him, as he has slow feet and bad lateral quickness. Rubio is a combo of Jason Williams and a poor man's Rajon Rondo. He is a worse shooter than Rondo (much worse) and he is the same type of "floor general" as Williams. What Rubio does well and bad: Strengths: Pressure defense, getting steals, physical team defense, ball hawking in half court (all of which are automatic fouls in the NBA). Will NOT "translate" to the NBA. In the Euroleague that is all legal under the rules, in the NBA they are instant fouls because the NBA refs call the game much tighter. Passing and play creation in the open court. Will translate to the NBA and will get better because the NBA is way more open and way less physical. In this way he will get better in the NBA. His ability to get to the free throw line is good and he is a good foul shooter. Would improve in the NBA where the lane is much more open, refs call the game much tighter, the game is much less physical, and where the NBA will command the refs to send him to the line for "marketing reasons". Weaknesses: Cannot shoot, cannot score, has no shooting range, cannot create his own offense in the half court, cannot run the pick and roll well enough, cannot create offense for others in the half court, cannot play half court basketball with any effectiveness whatsoever. Will all translate to the NBA, which is a bad thing, not a good thing. If you get Rubio, you just picked up a much worse shooting version of Rafer Alston. That is how Rubio "translates" to the NBA. What is so hard to understand?
I remember they said the same thing about Rudy Fernandez after his career defining game aginst the US...They said he couldnt shoot and was a flashy passer...seems as soon as he got to the NBA he shoots well in between 22 and 23.5 ft...everywhere else is another story... If Rubio works hard enough, he can have a lengthy career throwing up darts and making slick passes...Rudy and Rubio would be an entertaining yet awful backcourt for years to come.....
I haven't seen much of Rubio but I would say no from everything I've read on here and other places. Rafer-lite comes into my head Lowry is super young and still has room from improvement. I'm not opposed to trading him but it better be for a definite upgrade. No one in their right mind can say that Rubio is a definite upgrade at this point.
Should have been more clear, thanks: It's a risk/reward thing. History shows that, by and large, championships are won with blue collar selfless PGs....and rarely by teams riding a star PG (Thomas Pistons a rare exception). What's the upside to trading out an excellent blue collar PG that fits the mold seen on so many championship teams for a high risk potential star in Rubio? You're rolling the dice (and he's very much a dice roll) to buck history. I'd rather hold on to the bird in our hand on this one. If we were talking about a similar situation with the 3, 5, or even 4 spot? I'd be far more interested.
I'm going to swallow my bile and agree with Crazy Greek MPD man/OHMMS here - Rubio has kind of sucked recently - and by recently, I mean a TWO YEAR LONG slump. Minus the hype, if he came out this year for the draft, he'd be a late first, early 2nd rounder - I don't see him cracking this years lottery based on his result list so far.
*Face palm* The guy didn't want to play/live in Minnesota and has contract issues, in saying "agree to play with" it means he actually wants to play in houston AND wants to get past the red tape with his contract in Espana
, I knew he was overrated but i didn't think it was that bad. But like i initially stated (before i read that statement), Lowry had his best year in the NBA while Rubio had his worst in the EURO LEAGUE. Enough said.
A year ago? Maybe. In fact, probably. Now, after how things have played out, for the both of them? Nah. In fact, hell nah.
I haven't read any posts in this thread other then the OP. Just want to say NO FN WAY that's the worst idea ever. Lowry is a beast, Rubio can barely get consistent playing time in a euro league. Maybe he will be better here, but that's too much of a maybe for how well Lowry played this year.
