Since the Texans are basically starting fresh, would trading Andre Johnson for draft picks be a good thing?

They aren't starting fresh. They aren't rebuilding. The idea is to get things back on track. So you keep everyone and try to find a good fit at QB like the Steelers did with Rapesburger.

If the goal was to re-build then I would say yes.

The Texans wouldn't get much for AJ right now due to his age and contract so no real point unless he demands a trade.

New coaching staff, new qb sounds like a fresh start to me. Andre is getting to that age, and he also deserves a ring. Realistically, Texans are at least 2 years from contending. I love Andre to death, but I also think he needs a veteran quarterback that can win him a ring before he retires.

If you've listened to anything McNair has said, you'd know that he believes the team still has the talent to compete again quickly. And he wouldn't have hired O'Brien if he thought this was a long term rebuild either. So none of the owner, GM, or coach believes this team is starting over. With that mindset, there's no way he'd be looking to trade Andre. You might think this team is in a different place, but your opinion doesn't matter.

FWIW, The Colts changed coaches and QB and were back in the playoffs immediately. So did KC. So did Philly. Niners changed their coach one year, their QB the next and went to the Super Bowl. New coach/QB combo doesn't automatically mean a team is far away from competing.

First off there are a ton of franchises that would jump at the chance of having Andre Johnson on there team. Even at this stage of his career, the fact that he put up all pro numbers again with 3 QB's even furthers the point.

People need to remember this isnt madden, this is the real NFL and AJ while he does have a lot of miles on those tires, the treads are still good for several years. You do not just "accidently" get 109 catches and 1,400 yards.

    And to answer the question

    "Hell NO"

You let the first Texans HOF/ALL PRO/ALL WORLD WR retire a Houston Texan as per his first press conference when he stated he wanted to play his entire career here.

Colts got Andrew Luck! Philly happened to have a stud in Foles, which was a rare find, and KC brought in a veteran quarterback and a veteran, proven coach. Texans are in a different boat, besides I am talking about possibly getting something for Andre Johnson that the Texans could use for years to come, not blowing up the whole team. Don't forget, Dre does not have much time left.

I believe the cap hit would be so massive that it would basically set us back 3 years, if we traded him.

Having AJ80 could be critical for a young, rookie QB. So no.

Since he's 32 already he's got one or two more good years imo. Terrell Owens regressed at 34 and Randy Moss's last good year he was 32. Teams know this and will not give up much for him. I would say we could maybe get a 3rd if we're lucky.

You would get like 5th round pick. Marshal Faulk in his prime was trade for a 2nd and 5th rounder.

It makes no sense to rebuild with Andre but not anyone else. If you don't blow up the whole team then you don't get rid of a guy who can help you win now.

Bob is almost 80. He knows he may not live 5 more years. He just wants to win ASAP.

There is no such thing as "rebuilding" in the modern NFL. It is entirely possible to turn a team around in a single year

Nope, he should retire a Texan unless he wants out. It would screw up the cap also. Someone would def give a 2nd maybe even a 1st or swap them. Andre is still elite bro.

The 49ers, KC, and Philly _ The new coaches for those teams had groceries in the cupboard when they took over and didn't have rookie QBs. I think Indy had the perfect storm. Luck became the best QB in a weak division the day he was drafted. They also hit on their other draft picks and had champions like Wayne and Mathis to help lead the young guys.

I don't think the Texans have the talent those other teams had when those coaches took over those teams and right now two of our best players Cush and Foster are injured and even if they are ready to go on opening day, it's no telling how long it will take them to get back to their pro bowl playing levels _ if they even can. And with the cap issues the Texans won't be very active in free agent activity. Those same guys who say we're aren't in a rebuilding year are the same guys who said we were championship contenders. I'm not saying it can't be done but the Texans aren't in the same position as those other teams you mentioned.
