Alex Smith was absolutely not the consensus #1 pick in the 2005 draft or the consensus #1 QB. The 49ers went back and forth on who they were going to draft #1 between Smith and Rodgers and a lot of people thought that Braylon Edwards was the best player in the draft. Smith received no where close to the hype that Luck is getting.
Pretty much how I remember it. I thought they would choose Rodgers because he was the local guy. Thought both were mistakes, but did think they should take Smith if they had to take a QB.
Alex Smith was absolutely never hyped coming out of college. The 49ers were incredibly reluctant to draft him, and actually shopped the number 1 pick that year heavily. I believe you are misremembering.
Fresno did have a pro-style offense and although they didn't play in a good conference, they did beat some teams from good conferences. I was kind of kidding with that reply, but also making the point that there is no such thing as a sure thing, especially with college QBs. IIRC, everyone around the country thought Carr was the perfect fit for a new franchise like the Texans. I remember plenty of NFL pundits saying we couldn't go wrong with him or Joey Harrington, both of which would have long and decorated careers in the NFL.....
i thought they did more of a spread offense, but yeah him going #1 was all but expected and not ridiculed by any means.
absolutely. but i promise you, there is no way the team with the #1 pick would trade it for Andre, alone.
That team would ask for King's ransom in return with multiple pro bowlers and multiple picks. I don't recall a QB being this touted in a while , but i don't follow drafting process much to begin with anyways.
where have i heard that before? oh yea, almost every year about number 1 pick QBs (or any position for that matter).
I can do one better without having to give up andre. With the 25th pick, in the first round, the houston Texans select Robert Griffin jr jr. Groom him for the next three years in kubiak's offense. Pssh, like Kubiak is going anywhere.
Not true. Almost all #1 pick QB's had at least one glaring weakness in their scouting reports (lack of mobility, arm strength, size, accuracy, etc). I have never seen someone with absolutely no perceived weaknesses like Andrew Luck in decades.
That's exactly what popped into my head, every year without fail is a 'sure-fire, can't miss guy' most times that guy doesn't pan out. No one is a sure thing until they're out there on the field.
Yes, but right now, Luck is an unknown. For a team with the top pick, you wouldn't trade for AJ because a great receiver isn't that valuable to a bad team.
Sometimes the top QB in a draft is a once in a decade type of guy and sometimes the QB is just the best guy coming out that year. Andrew Luck is no David Carr, I guarantee you that. He's extremely intelligent, son of an ex NFL QB, athletic, has size and arm strength, great school, great coaching, and he's performed. He also has character as evidenced by the fact that he could have easily entered the draft last year and been a top pick. I think he's going to be a very good QB in the NFL. It's hard to predict because you never know what team he ends up with or any injuries that might happen but I think he's that once in a decade type player. Time will tell.
Andrew Luck has been touted as the #1 pick for 2 years now. David Carr wasn't hyped as much and it was questioned at one time whether there was a QB worthy in the 2002 draft to be picked #1 overall. It was more like we needed a QB and he's the best available QB so let's draft him, instead of OMG we simply cannot pass up on this once of a lifetime prospect.
