One last place you might get some info from on this.

    http://www.eskimo.com/~pbender/mavs.html

Patricia Bender has been keeping track of NBA salaries for years, but her specific fandom belongs to the Mavs. Ill bet she either knows the true answer or knows someone who does.

Man, Morey should be all on this deal if the Bosh thingy falls through.

If Morey took on Brand's contract to get Turner (which he won't), he could offer Battier ($7.4M) + Hayes ($2.3M) + Andersen ($2.5M). That would be $12.2M in expiring contracts (Hayes and Andersen have team options). Philly might press for #14 but that would be too much for taking on such a contractual albatross.

    Yao, Whiteside (or Alabi)
    Scola, Hill, Jeffries and Brand
    Budinger, Ariza
    Martin, Turner and Taylor
    Brooks, Lowry

With two rosters spots open for Alexander Johnson and a backup center.

Thanks for the reminder, R2K. I used to go to Patricia's site a lot, but when she changed the site's name, and I got a new PC, somehow she fell off my radar. She's always been a great source, especially on salaries and contracts. If we ever had a list of sites recommended for information (which is not a bad idea, btw), stuff you don't always find here, at least without a search, Patricia would be one of the best for the things she seems to specialize in, like contracts and such.

It all depends on Morey's assessment of Turner's potential. I like the kid. But I am no Morey. So I'd trust his judgment over mine. If Morey thinks, as some say, that Turner is Roy-good or better, then I think he would bite. You just don't pass up talent like that.

Adding Yao, Brand, and Turner to this team would make us instant contender.

Sixers would want somebody young back not named Hayes. Besides, Hayes is our back-up center. A better, more enticing, deal would be Battier + Jeffries + Bud and NY 2011 pick.

Brand showed several flashes of being the player he was last year. I takes two years to heal from his type of injury. I'm guessing that E Brand and Al Jeff have big years this year...

I was a huge fan of his for a long time, always mentioning him when the offseason "could we trade for this guy?" threads would pop up. If the guy was healthy and 80% of what he once was for the next 2-3 years, he'd be valuable to have. Bummer about the size of the contract. Is it worth taking on Brand to get a player like Turner, who has great potential? At least they couldn't expect much beyond taking Brand, so except for cap hell, we'd still have most of our guys. I'm kind of fond of them. This team was the most fun I've had watching a Rockets squad in years, even with the record.

I'd think we'd have to give up JJ and/or Hill in the deal for Brand & #2 without giving up #14.

I think this is another way of looking at this scenario:

Let's say it was a rookie Brandon Roy himself who was up for offer with the #2 pick and Elton Brand's contract. Thus, should the Rockets take on Elton Brand's contract in order to get that rookie Brandon Roy?

My answer: Yes. Besides Yao, taking Turner would have the Rockets' franchise player set for years if Turner (Brandon Roy-like) lives up to his potential.

    Indeed.

It's unfortunate that because many fans here never experienced the NBA before the rookie salary scale. So people like to assume that rookies should make peanuts simply because they're rookies.

To give an example, Shaq signed a rookie deal in 1992 for 7yr/$41 mil. Hakeem signed a contract with the Rockets in 1993 for 6yr/$34 mil. One player has been to 2 NBA finals and one of the best centers in the game. The other is a ROOKIE.

So indeed, you can pretty much just switch their salaries. If Turner is all that, and Morey would obviously think so if he goes for the trade, then he's worth Brand's contract. And Brand, despite his injuries, would be worth Turner's rookie contract. Switch things around, and the salaries don't look half bad.

Thank you for putting it in simpler words man. I've said it 3x in this topic at least.

By the time Brand runs out, Turner will still be on his rookie contract and will want a extension.

If you put it like you just did, it doesn't seem bad at all. Also as I said, if Turner is a major bust then we can just let him go, both Brand and Turner will be gone. I know it doesn't make up the last 2 years of Yao's contract...but I don't see this team winning a chip without another go to dominating player in the next 2 years any way. Turner may not be that year one, but he can certainly breakout his 2nd or 3rd year like most rookies do.

Think about it like we are paying Turner a max salary and Brand a rookie contract...:)

I agree with you BUT it depends on how good Morey thinks Turner (or whomever he selects) is. If there is a true franchise caliber guy in this draft you almost HAVE to do it if you are financially able.

Brand isnt exactly a scrub either. He might just need a better coach, team, whatever. He can still contribute on this team. Worse comes to worse, he becomes another McGrady esque trade chip in 2 1/2 years.

How the hell did you get Bosh here without giving up any valuable players? Other teams are competing to sign Bosh too you know

    About the Dampier contract status:

    http://www.shamsports.com/content/pages/data/salaries/mavericks.jsp

The last year seems to be totally unguaranteed because:

    1) Dampier didn't get selected to three allstar games during this contract
    2) He didn't play 2100 minutes in 2009-2010

Now, I can't guarantee the accuracy of this, but I'm not sure why they would fabricate these terms, either.

    About Turner:

The predraft measurements confirmed that Turner has short arms for his height so the possibility of him being able to play 3 different positions in the NBA took
a hit. He is basically the same size as Brandon Roy though, so still plenty of size to play the 2 position.

brands contract is 3 years long, but only a bad contract for 2 years.

the 3rd year he will be an ending contract and become very valuable.

i would take on his contract to have a chance at turner becoming a superstar.
