READ BEFORE YOU VOTE!!

Would you still be a satisfied fan if…the Rockets never won a championship again, provided that the following two conditions are true:

1. They are a good and competitive team, making the playoffs every year and sometimes go deep.

2. Most of the players are not just good players but also good guys you like. (Whatever “good guy” means to you.)

I have been on this board for almost 14 years. I have noticed that posters value different things as fans. A lot of arguing and debating actually are not due to disagreement of facts but due to disagreement of values. So this thread is about what you as a fan value most. Is it winning a championship? Are there some other things you value more than winning a championship?

I know nobody fits neatly in any of the choices. It is probably a continuum rather than 5 distinct categories. But that’s the best we can do with a poll. So pick the one that is closest to how you feel.

If you asked this to football (or futbol) fans, you might as well be asking them in Greek, because they wont understand the question.

Same for me with basketball. I had a lot of practice rooting for Rice with no hopes of winning, all I need is seats in the stadium to make me happy.

Basketball is my favorite sport by far. There is nothing better than rooting for your home team live. Plus, I love seeing how they play against the best in the league. I love seeing how they react to wins and losses

Championship over everything. That's the whole point of the game. I would rather win the wrong way with the wrong players than lose the right way with the right players. I'll root for the jersey no matter who puts it on (within reason... Does ISIS have any players coming out for the draft?) but won't be fully satisfied until we reach the promised land. Plus good guys/players vs. bad guys/players is so narrative driven. Perception is reality for most people... but for me reality is reality. Perception is irrelevant to me if we win.

good thread.

championships are hard to come by. while i hope the teams i root for always set the goal of contending for championships, i will be happy, as a bottomline, to see them stay competitive. good character guys will be a bonus.

always compete. always try your absolute best. even if you're going down, go down swinging. that's the point of sports, isnt it.

now you guys understand why i can't stand harden, even more so than, say, sf3.

Sure, winning is everything.

But is having fun being a fan for your home team tied to winning? That's the question.

From a player's perspective what would they say if you asked each of them on Draft Night, can you retire satisfied as a player without winning an NBA Championship?

I think the poll is asking how many years would you give them for Championship before Bust Baby. At least that's my interpretation of the poll. I don't think you'd ever give up (the last choice).

I think you have to assume you don't know that the team will never win.

It's exactly why most GMs (including Morey) can keep their jobs as the majority of the fans would continue to root for the team despite the lack of championships.

I don't get pride from a particular pro sports team doing well since, you know, I had nothing to do with it.

But anyway the closest to the truth for me is this:

"I would not be satisfied, even frustrated, but I would still happily root for the Rockets."

Except after a while I might remove the word "happily" if they're playing like ****. But I would still be a fan and support them. I also just happen to enjoy (good) basketball.

Give me players who don't have the talent of others but have the heart (Lowry, ScoLandry lead team) and will always make games competitive and I'll be content.

That team's energy and effort was why I spent 25K to spend a 3 week holiday in Houston strictly watching Rockets games.

I wouldn't even go to more than 1 game with this current team If I had the money. 50% chance you've wasted your money and who you went to watch aren't even trying.
