I think its pretty clear that last year's defense was just a holdover from the JVG era. That's what I'm most sad about, is that JVG with Artest, Battier, Scola, etc. would have made this by far the most feared defensive team in the league. With Adelman, the offense - with more talented players - is even worse than JVG's, and the defense isn't even close.
Same here. Good offense is always pretty (see Phoenix), but you can't win a championship without defense (also see Phoenix).
isn't he on contract with espn?... If so, then dont remind this is just another wishful thinking thread.
The time has come for Rockets to change for the sake of changing. Bring JVG back. Bring Rudy back. Heck, bring someone back whose name is not Adelman.
Lest we forget, JVG managed to cope with 50 million injuries to Yao and a hefty amount for T-Mac (Yao missed like what, 150 games during the JVG era?) and he had nowhere near the roster Adelman commands at the moment (think about it...JVG's rosters were pretty much (average to below-average PG/scrubby PFs/scrubby SFs/McGrady/Yao). Injuries shouldn't be an excuse, especially since dealing with them should be pretty much the first priority for anyone trying to be head coach of the Rockets. I appreciate that Adelman may not be at fault and is just trying to do his job, but really, bashing on JVG is counterproductive to that argument.
Sorry, but JVG had his shot and couldn't get it done. There's a lot to like in him as a coach, but there's also a lot NOT to like. You guys are just using selective memory when you think about him.
I like JVG and was not trying to bash him in that post, but bringing him up is pointless in terms of bringing him back. Was T-mac ever half assing it while JVG was coaching like he has been rumored to like this year? This team went through a lot last year and still made the playoffs and RA was coaching that team.
There is no doubt the team would be better under JVG. Adelman seems to have horrible people skills and a big part of coaching a team with so many different personalities is the ability to get the most out of each guy individually. JVG was a master of keeping guys sharp and motivated. Adelman is good at shrugging his shoulders and acting like he is too tired to communicate with his players off the court. As far as what we see on the court these days; I see hot and cold defense (more cold) and offense that makes JVG look like Mike D'Antoni. Even the guys who hated JVG are left with one excuse. They cling to the "JVG wouldn't play the young guys" which may or may not be true but judging by how long it took for Adelman to give Wafer a shot I don't think anyone can honestly say Adelman is any better at giving young guys a chance. Hell, Carl Landry had to kill guys in practice for half the season before he got a chance under Adelman. When you look at the disparity in talent between the JVG teams and last years roster and this year's roster you can't argue that the team would not be much, much better under our bitter old friend, Van Gundy. But the past is the past and Jeff Van Gundy isn't walking through the door to come save the day.
Well Yao was injured last year during the playoffs and Tmac is unhealthy this year. Both Yao and Tmac are past their prime.
He was grumpy all the time. He never really gave rookies a fair chance unless he absolutely had to. His offense was pretty much pick and roll...pick and roll...pick and roll...Yao iso!...pick and roll...pick and roll...Yao iso! He was stubborn with his rotations. He never really changed his offense, which lead to several "put Yao in the high post!!!11" threads. His last plays were pretty terrible. He REALLY was grumpy all the time. ...That said, I still kinda miss him.
well duh, everything on this forum is pointless if you look at it that way. You think Les takes a look in Clutchfans and says, "hey, hmm, maybe we SHOULD do that trade proposed by tmac2913809!"
I still remember the game in JVG's last season where he called a timeout 30 seconds into the game, and was furious and red in the face at a blown rotation.
Right now, this team could definitely use JVG's never-say-die (well, atleast in the regular season ) mentality. It wouldn't be pretty, but Van Gundy would squeeze out a few more wins through his stingy defense. However, JVG relied greatly upon McGrady being the initiator and finisher for his offense. And IIRC, he didn't have a lot of success when McGrady was out. Our record was pretty poor with just Yao. I realize the team has a lot more talent now then during the JVG era. Nevertheless, how successful would Van Gundy be with this team as it stands now, with Battier and Artest injured and McGrady being so inconsistent?
I am huge JVG's fan even though I think coach RA is also good. But I will always prefer JVG to RA with current Roster. Current Rocket team is a 70-win potential, but now played like below 50%. Now Rockets is officially a pretender like Utah. They can beat good team, they have potential and never fully realize its potential. JVG's team just didn't have enough talent but always fought to death. Do you remember who JVG had to started in Rockets-Dallas series? RynBo! and steal 2 wins.
I can't stand it any more .Bring JVG back! For it I have 3 reasons: 1)The team is out of RA's control 2)No change would make the team worse than we are 3)The team can't play offense well because the lack of athleticism,no coach could resolve the question with current squad,it's time for us to turn to our old way--JVG defense.
*sighs, here we go* "Jeff Van Gundy isnt walking through that -" Maybe the Rockets should talk to him just because, like how shopping players in trades serves as motivation. I have thought of Van Gundy, can't lie. Naturally do when you see pathetically porous interior defense. But we might see Calvin Murphy back before we see Van Gundy. Now maybe after 2010 if a big free agent signs...
