Timing, You and I are in complete agreement. I am certainly not suggesting that the USA is not acting out of its own best interests, it is. That is what George W is supposed to do. There certainly is a plurality in our views, what I wonder is with Iraq, does this represent a change in our overall global strategy, or is it only because they have the natural resources and money that allows us to rebuild them using their resources. Cerainly a quandry for sure. No one can argue that Saddam is a nice guy, or that he has not used WMD before, and probably will again. What they can argue is whether he is an imminent threat. I guess what the President is saying is that immiment may have changed to "future" threat, and what does this say about our overall policy. The North Korea issue is a prime example of the two sided coin that is our policy right now. I think we just have to take out Iraq, and then rebuild it and deal with other problems as they come up. DD
No, actually I just found it so idiotic that someone would support something so ridiculous. Why don't we ban French classes in school also. Why don't we change Louisana's law from the Napoleonic Code. Why don't we just change the name of the state since its named after someone French. Come to think of it, why don't we ban driving Cadillacs till the company changes its name. Why don't we remove the French Revolution from High School History Text Books. I mean, I just can't believe you would defend this, really.
classic! She only speaks french Roy, she doesn't speak imbecile. See, the problem here is, is that my little brother, this morning, got his arm caught in the microwave, and, and uh, my grandmother dropped acid, and she freaked out and hijacked a school bus full of penguins, so it's kind of a family crisis, so, come back later? Great.
I think it was Denis Miller who said to leave the French alone, at least they stood up to the Bush administration, which is more than the Democrats have done. That's from a guy in favor of the war. Also it's funny that people like to point out how quickly the French surrender and lose wars etc. but without the help of the French in the revolutionary war, we might still be a colony of England.
Huh? 19th century, yes, they were very imperialistic, as was much of Europe, and very expansionist when they could be (they were also fairly unstable until about 1875 when the Third Republic could start to build momentum). I guess Britain won the imperialism war in the 19th century, though. In the 20th century, the problem was decolonialization. France began the proccess after WWI, and then it was sped up after WWII (not by their choice). They were often hesitant to decolonize, which caused problems, but they were not aggressive in the 20th. I think Germany and Russia would have to be called the most imperialistic of the 20th Century - did you forget about them? Does it matter that "French Fries" were most likely invented in Belgium? Moules et frites are big in both countries but, again, are Belgian.
the best of the story linked from yahoo: The French Embassy in Washington had no immediate comment, except to say that french fries actually come from Belgium.
French Fries are now Freedom Fries? France is so uppity about its cuisine, I'd think they'd be glad not to be attached to deep-fried potato sticks . . .
When you say "big," you are not at all kidding, are you? "Mommy, I'm scared!" Okay, that image is from Paris. Here's one from Belgium. See how the ingrateful Euros spend their time with their unwholesome spuds! (viva la frites freaks!)
You hear about a restaurant owner in NJ who flushed bottles of Dom and other expensive French wine and champagne down the toilet in support of the war. I'd applaud him on his stand except he sent out press releases.
I'm so glad that we could decend this thread into jokes from Coming To America. I'm so proud of myself. "If lovin' the Lord is wrong, I don't wanna be right."
the thing with boycotting french wines is that the people are only hurting american businesses. the wines have already been imported and sitting in some american's wine shop, etc... you are hurting the american businessman, cause he's already paid for that wine...
I disagree. Not everyone is boycotting French wines, so domestic stocks will still deplete....albeit more slowly. Besides, good red wine will celler well. And if it's white? Well.....who really gives a rat's ass about white. Besides, this is a great opportunity for people who think they like French wines to learn how great California wines are. (I know there are other states....including our own....that make wine; but California really puts out some great stuff).
