    Oh, to answer the question....

No, I'd rather kill a whole lot of people for what I believe in......I'll pass on the dying part. [IMG]

I would fight for my country if it needed me, and perhaps I would die figthing.

As for my family, you bet your ass I would die for them. My 2 year old son is the most important thing in the whole darn world.

And I too would like to thank all those who gave their lives for this country, so that all of us can live in a free society.

I would die for things I believed in.

I'm not so sure about which things until that time came. But, I'm certain about my religion, my family, and most likely my friends.

I mean, I believe stuffed crust pizza sucks, but I wouldn't die for it.

Sort of. It isn't as strong as it used to be, and it tends to fluctuate. I think sometimes I sound more British than Aussie, but yes I still have it.

And I still drink a lot of tea!

If someone put a gun to my head and said renounce everything you believe in, i would say hell yes.

If someone said you get a gun and you have to fight these 10 guys at a paintball arena or renounce your beliefs, i would do that.

As long as i had a fighting chance, i would take it. But if i would certainly die, i would choose life.

The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?

It isn't what you say, it's what you feel.

If someone told me to say I was a pro-life, Christian Right Republican or they'd kill me, I'd do it.

I'd know in my heart that I was a pro-choice liberal.

So if the situation in the middle east is the only answer to my question 'how do you die for your religion?' then does that mean you just die in the process of murdering other people for not believing in the same thing as you?

I don't understand the rules for dying for a loved one. Are you dying so they don't die (which they would eventually do anyway), or so they get an extra $100 or what? In either case, I don't know if I would choose it, but I don't think I should. I love my family and all, but their deaths won't be the worst things in the world. Nor mine.

I'd also have a hard time dying for my religion, since I'm currently atheist. I'd bow to a golden calf if circumstances demanded.

Nevertheless, I'd certainly die for God's sake if I was under the impression that he had a sake. I understand how the Muslim martyrs feel about it.

Dying for the environment was the weirdest one I saw. And 2 people said it! I suppose I did not previously appreciate how deeply felt the ethos was. It seems semi-religious to care about the environment after you're dead.

Dying for spite. This is, I'm sure, how I'm going to get it. I'll probably end up sacrificing my life just to show someone up.

I don't believe the cause of the Crusades was instigated by a conflict in religious beliefs. To me, it was more of a land dispute, especially who had control of the holy land, Jerusalem. The Christians wanted to regain control of this area from the Muslims. Maybe some can see that as fighting for religious beliefs, but I do not.

As far as the Middle East conflict between the Palestinians and the Jews, doesn't that really fall under the same category as above? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Palestinians claim to be the descendants of the illegimate son of Abraham, Ishmael, while the Jews claim to be the descendants of the legitimate son of Abraham, Isaac. That's how the whole dispute came about, with both sides claiming that God had intended for them to be in control of the land. Therefore, it would be more of a land dispute, and not dying for your religious beliefs. I apologize if anything I said was wrong.

When I think of dying for your religious beliefs, I think of the martyrdom of the apostles.

tpl, it seems that both in the Crusades and in the current Israeli-Palestinian war, the parties are fighting over a thing that occupies the nexus of Religion and Land. They are fighting for control of land, but because God ordained them to control the land. So, while it is a land dispute, it is one in which religious convictions come into play.

    Juan,

Didn't Hitler play a part in creating Israel to fulfill biblical prophesy?

tpl, I'm not sure what part it would play in this conversation, but this is what I know or think I know on the subject:

The Old Testament also names the area the Promised Land of the jews. It's an area they've clung to for religious convictions before there was Nazis, Muslims or Christians.

There is a Biblical prophecy about the chosen people returning to the promised land before end-times. Hitler was probably aware of it.

Hitler was very much into prophecy and occult pseudo-christian stuff. I'd fully expect him to think he could somehow force God's hand by fulfilling his prophecies for him.

Hitler did consider resettlement plans for Jews, including one to send them to Palestine and another to send them to Madagascar. Ultimately, he settled on extermination though and I don't think he ever resettled any Jews.

Zionist Jews had already started returning to the promised land well before Hitler came to power anyway. It started at the tail-end of the 19th century. They came to the area and bought up land.

England must shoulder a lot of the blame for the mess because they promised the area (which was a protectorate of theirs) to both European Jews and to Palestinians for their help in the war effort.

Ultimately, Israel created itself with several wars to establish Jewish hegemony. Some were motivated by religion, some not.
