No one is suggesting that Fitz is the QB of the future so I don't really understand your point. He's nothing but a stop-gap till either Savage is ready, or we draft someone else to take over. Mallett is essentially just an emergency QB this season so that we don't have to throw a rookie in there who wouldn't be prepared to run a complex system.
That was about the worst this secondary has played this season and the oline is not as good as in the early games, yet we still made a game of it - despite being down 24 points. I wouldn't panic yet. Still, I would like to see what Mallett has before the end of the season - but not at risk of putting the season in further doubt. Let's see what he has in garbage time first.
system? this system makes about as much sense as lesbian sex. That said you are right in that this is a temp move (stop gap as you put it)and aka texans are punting for now on QB position in general. maybe next year.
I dont get that reasoning, if O'B didnt bring him in to play and hes just "an emergency qb" then why trade a pick and just keep Keenum?
Yes, system. The same system New England used so successfully for years when they were one of the most dominant offenses in NFL history. It's notoriously difficult to master because it puts so much on the QB to do pretty much anything and everything. A system like what Kubiak used is MUCH easier on QB's. As to punting on the QB position, that might be what they did, or maybe Savage develops into something. Only time will tell, however I can't blame them for punting on the QB class last year, IMO it's doubtful that there was a really good QB in the entire class.
Cassel led them to 11-5 ( because of the system) so why didn't they keep him? That's because Bill philosophy won't let them over pay for systematic players who can be replaced. Im pretty sure its about the money instead of if Mallet was good or not. Plus if he was that bad why did they keep him last year when there were quality cheap backups out there who would have love to play for a quality playoff team. Another why do yall keep assuming the worse when it comes to subjects like this Bobbythegreat? Nobody on here seen this man play , therefore we don't how good or bad he is.
You're missing my point. I think Brady could get cut if he doesn't turn it around. He was average last year and he's been worst this year. It would have cost the Patriots nothing to hold on to Mallet for this year. And if they thought he was good _ they would have kept him... And Mallet isn't going to get a big money contract _ maybe a contract similar to what Matt Flynn got... Probably less since he's never played. New England has given other players contracts and the ones they don't _ seem not to be very good anymore. How many good players that you've seen New England let go that dominated or was as good on other teams...??? And I guess you can say the same about their coaches. Anyway, Mallet just got here not too long ago. He wasn't here for OTA's or training camp. He may not even be ready to start right now. But I do believe that Fitzpatrick is the stop gap for Mallet and fans who are talking about which quarterback the Texans should take in next year's draft in the 1st round are just wasting their time.
They didn't keep Cassel because Brady was still in his prime... And don't forget that Cassel was throwing to Randy Moss and Wes Welker. And because Cassel played in more games _ he commanded a much higher contract than what someone like Mallet would. I think it's more to do with Bill Belichick believing Jimmy G is better than Mallet than it is money but never know. Did you see Mallet play in the preseason...??? He was garbage and that was against backups. That may be why some are assuming the worst.
Why trade a pick? So that Savage isn't thrown to the wolves if Fitzpatrick goes down. And because the pick is a conditional 7th which is a lottery ticket at best and they will get one or two compensatory picks for losing Tate, Braman, Mitchell, etc that will make up for it. Why Mallet over Keenum? Because O'Brien and Godsey are more comfortable with Mallet and his knowledge of the system. Mallet also has a much better arm then Keenum.
It's the first season of this system and O'Brien doesn't have everything that he needs to run it correctly. He's trying to gradually turn a mostly zone team into one that can power the ball whenever it wants. And he badly needs a really good tight end (maybe CJ becomes this? ) and a dependable slot receiver with elite quickness. Not to mention the qb situation. I'm hoping another offseason will solve a decent amount of these problems.
Lol I see we have a concrete answer for everything Remii. None of us know why the Patriots did this or that. We are all making assumptions. Yes I seen Mallet play in preseason and my good friend I assume that's not the reason why they traded him. Dude is in his contract year so why keep him when you can get a player in the draft for cheap to ride the pine.
I understand what you're saying _ I just believe the Patriots are more worried about a guy who can play and not ride the pine. But never know... Mallet is ours now and eventually we may see him on the field. I just think that won't be until the playoffs are out of reach.
Funny how you guys don't devalue Tom Brady when he had Corey Dillon in 2004 because all Tom Brady did was hand the ball off. And Russell being able to run doesn't make him less of a quarterback than the other guys... Remember John Elway's super bowl years, well he was handing the ball off to Davis. But he's not devalued. Drew Brees actually had a very good year in San Diego. He was good before he got to New Orleans. It just took him a while to get going in San Diego. People only want to remember things how they want to but not how they actually happened. I wonder how good Rodgers would be if he didn't have Mr White Chocolate (Jordy "I'm Always Open" Nelson)... We can see the difference in Brady when he doesn't have guys like Moss, Welker, Gronk, Hernandez. But Russell _ gets devalued.
I agree with this^^^^^ . Coach Bill stated in his interview that (paraphrasing) Fitzpatrick is his guy. He said yes he made some mistakes that he will have to fix. But the Oline has to do a much better job in blocking period. He pointed out Fitzpatrick wasn't able to get into his 7 step drop back without a defender in his face. Especially in the 1st quarter. As far as the Patriots Remii they have a history of not paying roll players. If Bill thinks another player could provide what they need, he won't hold on to a player like Mallet. That has always been his philosophy. They let Welker go because they believe Eldemen could produce the same production.
I understand what you're saying. But I think the Patriots let Welker go because he was a ball dropper in crucial situations. And look at him now _ he's at the end of his rope, the Patriots let that dude go at the right time... As they do with practically every player they let go. Asanta Samuels is another guy who fell off when they let him go. You won't find too many players that the Patriots let go that were good elsewhere. But right now, I'm more concerned about O'Brien than I am the quarterback situation.
But yet not comfortable enough to see if he can perform at the next level. Complacency breeds mediocrity. If Fitz isnt your future and hes not taking you to the playoffs then why wait till you are dead in the water to make a move? Hell this"scrub" Mallet may just catch lightning in a bottle by stretching the field with two pretty good wr's and take us to the playoffs. But nah lets just stay pat and finish at .500 and claim the moral victory. Wahooo.
Yeah im worried about Coach Bill's strategy on offense and why our offense starts off so sluggish and lethargic.
