No, don't do it. You won't be an ass. There are other options for your nephew.

I have a friend who bought a house for his mom and she messed up his credit when she failed to make payments.

I ONLY will co-sign for my parents, sister and my future husband IF they proved themselves that they are good with payments.

    Don't do it.

You already gave two reasons for not doing it: they will default and you will be responsible.

Definitely do not do it. It doesn't make you an ass. Since you are not in a position to pay it off anyway, there's no way in hell you should even think about doing this.

Precisely... if you can't afford to pay it off - why would you even consider co-signing? why would you even feel bad for not doing so? your sister and husband should look at themselves for not being able to assist their child through college - rather than pawning off one of their top responsibilities as a parent onto you...

Tell your sister and/or nephew to visit the school's financial aid offices. There are all types of loans, grants, work-study, etc. that can be used to pay for tuition. The financial aid office can tell them what is available to them.

    (I re-read your post.)

Tell them you are not credit worthy for this type of loan either. If you think you're not then you're not, end of conversation. No need to discuss your private financial information. (For all they know you have to support your 14 love children from 9 different women)

I had a long talk with my sister and they are exploring alternate ways of making it work.

They did get approved for a student loan but it wasn't enough to cover all expenses and needed more money.

    Thank you for your advice
