Because (almost) everyone learned their lesson about irrational hype with the VY debacle.

Unequivocally yes on Sumlin. Meh on Johnny Football.

I understand the adament no's on Manziel, but not on Sumlin. I def see how someone could disagree on bring him in, but what could you possibly base a "hell no" on? He seems like a great leader with a scheme, who could come in here and hold the players accountable.

I'm not a fan of investing such a valuable pick for a RT. Misallocation of resources. A great RT is not a requirement of a great offensive line, you just need someone serviceable there, which can be done through free agency without breaking the bank. Felt the same way about WR2 - you should invest a first round pick in a guy you feel can take the #1 spot eventually, but if you're grabbing a full-time WR2 or slot in the 1st round I think you're failing.

In this day and age every single team has to pick their weakness. There are no complete rosters anymore. RT is a lower priority position. A middle class position. We don't need Orlando Pace at RT to right the ship. A ****ty Eric Winston did fine.

I actually wrote about the case against Sumlin today.

    http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/2013/11/kevin_sumlin_and_the_texans_bu.php

It's not a "hell no", because I agree with you that he's a great leader with an innovative scheme. But I'm concerned on three fronts:

1.) Sumlin's terrible track record on defense
2.) Pairing him with a top-flight DC is ideal, but A) would Kevin agree to relinquish some control of his staff and B) would McNair be willing to pay big bucks for a proven DC after hiring Sumlin and still paying for the guys he fired?
3.) Would Sumlin's inexperience (with the NFL) lead to Rick Smith getting even more control, and if so, is that a good thing?

I'm definitely not a Sumlin hater... I've been looking at him as a potential Texans hire for over a year now. And I'd still consider him... but these things worry me.

I think I can explain it:

    1) Houston ties for VY

    2) A&M's t-shirt fanbase is smaller at the moment than UT's was in 2006

    3) VY, as unpolished as he was, appears to have been twice the pro prospect in my eyes that JFF is

Exactly my feelings on him. He seems like a good coach and a great guy...but the defensive issues and lack of NFL experience give me pause.

Let's see what he can do for a few years after JF leaves before we declare him the next big thing.

I'd be happy with Vince Lombardi and Joe Montana.

Kudos for a fantastic article. The Texans need to look for the next Sean Payton and while I really, really like Sumlin, that's not him.

Verdict is still out on Sumlin's defense IMO. He's recruiting nothing but stellar defensive talent right now. The defense played fine last season. Talent-wise, TAMU is outmatched in the front 7 right now. There's no way to disguise that in the SEC. Didn't follow what he did at UH.

Sumlin has had a perfect storm the last 3-4 years. He walked into a situation at UH where he profited off of a great deal of talent left by Briles.

At A&M the same thing happened.....

I will give him this, he got more out of the players than previous coaches...

Still I don't think he has proven he is NFL calibur.

    Agreed.

I could see McNair promote Kubiak to GM or President as well. Maybe bring in Ray Childress to be a special assistant to Wade Phillips and we are ready to roll.

    BATTLE FIGHT!

I'm not even advocating Sumlin to the Texans, just wanted to add that Chip Kelly didn't do all that much compared to Sumlin (and I'm not saying Kelly is gold in the NFL). Kelly got to a title game but Sumlin actually has much more experience, including playing linebacker.

I was actually shocked at how little experience Kelly had.

JFF is better than RG3 and he went number 2...you would be a fool to pass on JFF

Taking RG3 at #2 is proving to be a huge mistake for the skins. Why would we want to repeat that mistake with JFF?

RG3 is fine. Even if he's restricted to the pocket for the rest of his career he'll be a top 20 QB at worst. He'll figure it out. He's smart. RG3 also has more physical tools than Manziel. He's clearly the better prospect. If RG3 was reinserted into the 2014 draft he'd go 1st.

i'm not so sure that the team w/ the 1st pick in the draft this year would trade it for RG3. i also think if the redskins were offered 1st pick this year in exchange for RG3 that they would probably pull the trigger on that
