Deep down, I get the feeling that we all just keep telling ourselves that DBs have a higher learning curve to make ourselves feel better about drafting Kareem Jacks0wned and another 6-10 season.

Edge rushers are not asked to carry a large intellectual load. They don't (overtly) read offenses, their responsibilities are (somewhat) limited. Their basic assignment is, "Go get *that* guy." It's pretty elemental and straight forward and much more independent.

Cornerback is inherently a more difficult position - you're reacting, in a dead sprint, to a bigger, faster WR who knows where he's going and when the ball is being thrown. Add in sophisticated offensive schemes, advanced scouting, an obvious uptick in talent - especially at the QB position (Manning twice a year) - a critical need for other components of your defense to play up to its potential (safety, pass rush), and I just think it's much harder to accurately predict results at the NFL level.

And then, even if your rookie CB can master all that, the offense can still pretty easily render him a spectator and still effectively move the football.

I understand the intuitive reason for what you're saying, it's sound, but it's got some holes in practice.

I think you're overestimating the schematic responsibility - the safety is usually the one who is tasked with making the coverage calls in the secondary and then making sure the CB understands them, so intuitively that's even mroe difficult but there's no shortage of rookie safeties excelling as young players (see Eric Berry last year).

Second, a quick perusal of edge rushers in recent years yields a pretty large proportion of late bloomers/busts/guys who did nothing as rookies. Last years crew did nothing of consequence. Only Brian Orapko comes to mind, of the highly-drafted edge rushers of the last 4-5 years or so,who excelled as a rookie. For every Kareem Jackson, there's a lot of Vernon Gholston's, Chris Long's etc. The proporiton of impact players doesn't appear to be any different.

sherman may know it but chances are it's a flaw that can be observed watching countless hours of film, interviewing not only the headcoach but assistants, teammates, friends, family, etc etc.

All i'm saying is that a potentially #2 pick will be thoroughly investigated and the chances of a potential major flaw will be discovered by a reletively competent team.

as for the transition from college to the NFL when compared to CB and pass rusher...it's just a general rule. Be it because of the learning curve of schemes and more importantly technique, or just that big of a drastic discrepancy in talent at those positions.

whatever the case, if i had to put money on it, the odds would be in favor of a top pass rusher (Dt or LB)to make a more immediate impact than a CB in their rookie year.

Is there any data to back up this assumption?

Because by my admittedly quick count, you would have lost money (or broken even at best) the last few years.

No. But that sounds like exactly the type of thing the Texans would do: overpay for a good 'ol Texas boy. Yeah, he's been a very good collegiate player but I can't help but think that if he was coming from an out of state school, he wouldn't be garnering so much interest from the org.

Who ever said that a great cover corner may only eliminate one side, well I challenge that! First of all, last year we couldn't cover either side, so it was a free for all! If Peterson CAN eliminate one side, I'm sure Wade is smart enough to load up the other side. With improved safety help from Quin instead of Wilson, that should help. Now OLB can be addressed in the second round, since there seems to be more quality this year for pass rushing OLBs, but a huge gap between CBs after PP and Prince.

We have a good LB core, good Dline... Terrible secondary! I superstar CB like PP will give us balance that we need. A decent secondary will make us at least a decent overall defense. With a great offense, that will be enough for playoffs.

I'm sorry. I don't wanna give up 3 high picks either, but IF we did, I'd want DB help first! Address our biggest weakness first! We have spent way too many first rounders on the front seven, DBs need help now!

Lastly, I think to make this all work, Kareem must nickel and the other side should be filled with a vet CB or even Jason Allen. I don't trust Kareem yet.
