No. I’m wondering why the Texans just making “an effort to talk to the guy” would placate you. Maybe they did. Maybe they knew they had zero chance. Or maybe, just maybe… he’s not that good and they didn’t want him. Regardless, why is just talking to the guy considered a win? Silly is griping about the team not pursuing the lone, average safety out there and then pretending like it was the last exit for the next 900 miles. What if – and I know this is crazy but stay with me – other teams - I’m spitballing here but let’s say in July/August-ish get REALLY radical and start releasing guys? I know, I know – INSANE, right?... I mean, did you marry the first girl you dated? Let’s at least get through free agency – heck, I’d settle for the draft - before we start ringing the fail bell. Let’s give Phillips a chance to hit the practice field with his team, figure out what he has and needs. He may think Nolan is the next Tramon Williams, for all we know.
I can see this thread has already taken the typical Texans thread storyarc. Anyway, back on topic, do I want to trade that far up for Von? No. Will Kubiak? Might as well. What does he have to lose?
I don't see what's so difficult to understand about it. True or not, there is the perception that the Texans "sit on their hands" regarding free agency. Effort would certainly help the perception of these fans, who think the Texans are more than happy to just "battlefight with the kids we got". No one is saying it's a "win". Just that effort counts -- much like you want Carlos Lee's fat ass to hustle up the line on a groundout. I've touted this argument before, but it's holding less and less water with me. I've got a sneaking suspicion that the people who are venting their frustration right now know damn good and well what month it is and where in the process things are. A good opportunity to upgrade the safety position (from *nothing*) before the labor lockout went by possibly without so much as a sniff from the Texans. Taking issue with this doesn't bother me. I see where folks are coming from. No one's pronouncing the entire offseason a failure yet. We *all* know what freaking time it is.
Not that you had me initially - I disagree "effort" in free agency is worth a scrap of anything - but comparing it to on-field results is a total disconnect for me. Lee hustling up the line *does* impact wins and losses. Calling an agent does not. And, WADR - who cares about placating an apathetic, prone-to-vitriol, (mostly) moronic fan base? You realize that leads to things like drafting Baby Vince, right? We don't know if they sniffed and/or what they were told. And as often happens, fans created a much different version of Atogwe than actually exists. Upgrading crap to mediocre crap is not, I'm sorry, what I want this team to focus on, nor am I going to get even remotely bothered by their refusal to do so - not after watching them actually take that approach for too much of the past five years. That’s what’s so weird here… They’ve done this. Repeatedly. Tried to patch things together with other team’s scraps and left-overs: It doesn’t work. They need to revamp their approach to personnel, and not picking at store shelves the day of a hurricane is a great place to start, IMO.
Yesterday I heard an interview on Sirius NFL with Gary Kubiak. The interviewer asked him about Wade Phillips and how they were going to approach the draft. Kubiak rambled on a bit, and got around to the first round pick. Kubiak said, "I don't know exactly who we are going to pick, be it a cornerback or a rush linebacker, but I..." at which point he cut himself off in mid sentence, as though he'd just realized that he'd said something he shouldn't have. And the interview just hung there with dead air for a couple of seconds until the interviewer came up with another question. So either he is a master of the art of disinformation, or they are planning to draft a cornerback or an OLB. Hopefully, this shouldn't surprise anybody, but it was interesting to sort of "see behind the veil" for a second. BTW, the interviewer also asked about Cushing and Kubiak said that he shouldn't be ruled out at the OLB just yet - that he was going to start inside, but they might move him after they have a chance to try to fit the pieces together. Finally, the fact that Von Miller is part of the lawsuit against the NFL, means that some teams will probably blackball him. He might drop a couple of spots, because he will be viewed as a malcontent and labor agitator.
Duly noted. That's not what I saw. Most fans were like: "Oh look a Safety! We just let two safeties go." This is the strong part of your argument. I'm with you here. Re: Atogwe, I don't know enough about him to know whether he's "mediocre crap" or something slightly better. Really, you're the only one I've seen comment on his actual abilities; others just see our glaring need for personnel *at all* and wonder why the Texans (presumably) didn't even try.
Signing a safety to a moderate contract when you're two starting safeties are gone is hardly comparable to drafting an overrated college QB with the first overall pick of the draft. Pretty much. I will withhold judgement until the season starts or the next time I have a slow day at work. Which ever comes first...
interesting but I wouldnt say Gary said anything that isn't anticipated, i.e, they will either get an OLB (be it Quin, Miller, etc) or the chance to get a CB in Prince. Idon't see them going ILB, DT, safety (unless you consider Prince that) or offense
So he can look lost for 4-8+ games? I'd rather, if they're going to trade up, take the surer thing. And Miller is the surer thing.
I'd say Peterson is much more of a sure thing than Miller. Peterson is already being hailed as one of the next great CBs.
Other than QB, CB is very possibly the toughest position to learn at the NFL level. And thus much riskier. Plus, even if he's instantly good - great, even - teams can negate him rather easily and exploit your other weaknesses. You can't negate Miller if he's the pass-rushing stud they've advertised. So he makes the entire team better.
Definitely conjecture, these threads are always conjecture. When the OP can't even name what station or who was talking, it usually means they were barely paying attention and just turned some guys game of "would you be willing to" into a rumor.
Look lost...he shuts down half of the field. Every game that he played against Alabama he locked down Julio Jones. He defended well A.J. Green his freshman year. On top of that, Chavis put Peterson in linebacker packages lining him up as a pass rusher. This guy is a hell of a talent. He is physically as gifted as Came Newton or Julio Jones, and he's the best defensive player available this draft. His size, speed, versatility, vision, and knowledge make him a must have IF we do plan on jumping up in the draft. Especially with our pathetic secondary.
I just heard from a espn podcast that because of the cba, teams cannot trade next year's pick. Again they can't trade next year's pick.
Very observant, Mr. Oski! In fact, I WAS in my car listening to a sports radio station which I cannot name. I channel-surf between 610, 790, and 1560, so they all blend in. My guess would be 610, since I listen to that one most. Also, to notice that I was barely paying attention was quite astute as well. I never claimed to be the most accurate reporter out there, and I know my job as an ESPN analyst would be in jeopardy if it leaked that all my facts weren't straight, but in this case, I decided to just have fun with it, since sports in Houston nowadays suck royally (maybe except for possibly the Rockets). I will tell you all exactly what happened and if you don't like it, get a life! I was driving while probably, but not positively, listening to 610am and they were lengthy discussions by the host and callers about this topic. I don't know who the host was, but he spoke as if there was a reliable source on this matter. I never fully believe everything I hear on the radio and not even on Clutchfans, believe it or not, but I do enjoy a good fun discussion once in a while... Especially with very little going on in the local sports scene in our humble little town. So if anyone wants to lock this thread, go ahead! It's just funny how this "conjecture" seems to stay on the forefront of the forum. So to all you haters out there, chill. Don't take life too seriously, let your hair down and just agree with me that Patrick Patterson is better than Von Miller. Thank you
I don't know if this counts as a source or if Alex Monaco read my thread on Clutchfans, but this topic is not far-fetched. This is from the BleacherReport in chron.com.
