I agree, with Dream, they had the centerpiece to grow around, the question you have to ask is whether they have that now in Yao, Kmart, or AB?

If the answer is no, and it probably is, then you got to try to get that superstar player, but to me, there are just so few of those, and most team's get one in the draft....

Maxwell was a good locker room guy, with the exception of a Carl Herrera incident all his teammates and his coach loved him! (1994), we all know that Maxwell was wronged by HPD, he was arrested for having 1 gram of weed. that's like what high school kids have every day!

He wouldn't trade Maxwell especially after the improvements he had year after year.

After all, he did lead the Rockets in ASSISTS in 1994 :)

take a look at their game logs from 93-94 - Max had only 30 games where teh team's O-rating exceeded 100 when he was on the floor. Kenny had nearly 60.

Another inconsistency that undercuts the premise of this thread, is that not only did the Rockets churn the roster significantly in the 90's, but they gut renovated the championship team just 50 games removed from winning a title, offloading Thorpe, and swapping in Drexler.

Then bailed on them in the playoffs.....and went to the golf course.

I loved his "competitiveness" but ultimately the dude was a basket case.

I'll tell you what I'm smoking.

Vernon played with a much better offensive team than Yao, he had Hakeem Olajuwon who was the primary scorer that he had to get the ball too.

His bad hot percentage was due to the offense having him jack up tons of 3s, and he loved it.

    90-91
)....On 1/ 26 Maxwell lit up the Cleveland Cavaliers for a career-high 51 points-30 in the fourth quarter....At the time, only four other players in NBA history had scored 30 points in a quarter: George Gervin (33), David Thompson (32), Wilt Chamberlain (31), and Michael Jordan (30)....Maxwell hit 14 of 25 field goals in that game, along with 4 of 10 three-pointers and 19 of 22 free throws in 46 minutes....He later scored 45 points in a game against Denver on 4/5, making a career-high 8 of 12 three-pointers, thus becoming only the fifth player in league history to make 8 treys in a game....

The Rafer excuse. And BTW Kenny put up a similar number of 3's at teh same time and managed to come away with non-abysmal overall FG%. Maxwell had a tough time with 2's as well as 3's.

well from 90-94 is the thread topic, so everything after that can't be used in the court of clutchfans! :p

don't forget he mentored sam cassell to become the confident player we all know.

nothing's wrong with a few technical fouls here and there!

Kenny was a better shooter yes. Maxwell was a streak shooter, but he wasn't a dumb player. he knew when to shoot and when to pass.

In that case, I'll bring up FGA: Max - 15.2 Ron - 15.0

Are you going to throw Rudy T and Hakeem under the bus to prop up Mad Max? Rudy's offense had everyone shoot 3s when Hakeem's doubled. Guess who was the only player who did that badly?

Vernon shot more 3s than our other players because teams doubled off of him. Remind you of any more recent Rocket you know?
