He's a first round draft pick. He's not the first first round draft pick to get thrown to the fire..they all do, for the most part. You draft first rounders with an expectation that they'll be playing. I don't think it's unfair to ask him to try to cover someone...I think that's probably his job.
http://www.battleredblog.com/2010/11/8/1801089/cutting-corners-the-kareem-jackson-pick-in-hindsight "With the 20th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Houston selects Kareem Jackson, Cornerback, Alabama." This was met with immediate shock on the draft thread here on BRB. Who?!?! That was the immediate reaction. The guy was projected to be a second-rounder at best. I even recall seeing some that had him slipping to the early third round. It was a real head scratcher, for sure. Perhaps not a "reach" by definition, but a "reach" in the opinions of many. To be honest, the fallout didn't last that long. It quickly turned to statements like "Well, he played in the SEC" and "Smithiak knows what they're doing." But after eight games in the NFL, Kareem Jackson looks like an undrafted free agent. He is good to get burned at least once or twice on a big play every single game, and he's picked on by opposing quarterbacks all game long. This has led many to label the youngster a bust. Personally, I'm not there...yet. He is definitely a project and he shouldn't be starting, that's for sure. Do I think he'll be a great corner someday? Probably not. Will he be an NFL caliber corner? Probably. Someday. My problem with the pick is that you don't take a project guy at #20 overall, especially when there were more NFL ready corners available at that spot. It isn't like Frank Bush's defensive scheme is helping Jackson any, but at some point you have to at least show some flashes of why you were a first round selection and the second corner taken overall in a very stacked draft. Sure, he has two interceptions and that is more than Dunta has done in Atlanta, but those are attributed more to bad throws by opposing QBs after taking a big hit. Plus, Kareem's tackling has been just beyond poor. There was a play in the game yesterday where he got turned around twice in pursuit of a ball carrier and let a 10 yard gain turn into about a 40 yard gain. He just flat out looked drunk on the play and it made me want to get (even more) drunk myself.
I think they should stick Kareem Jackson on covering TE's so he can hang with them in the speed department. It's his only chance. Maybe convert him to FS or something.
Its a tie , they all sucked...Each one of them was responsible for making our secondary one of the worst.........But again , who drafted them??...obviously we need a whole new way of scouting our players........damn the 40 times, damn the vertical jump , and damn the bench reps.....they need to focus on the cones and if any has any ball hawk skills........But to answer your question, Stevens hands down!!!!!!! At least Faggins could tackle after he gave up a 10 yard pass....He was a joy to watch on 3rd and 10 or less because you knew they were going to his side........A CB that is one of the leading tacklers on your team is NEVER a good thing
Not a single mention of John Busing? Really?? That guy had no business even occupying a practice squad spot for ANY NFL team - yet he saw the field on a regular basis last year. He was WAY worse than any name in that poll. Including Stevens.
The only ones drafted by the Texans were Kareem Jackson, CC Brown, and Faggins, I believe the rest were free agents
I don't understand how it can be anyone but Stevens. Faggins and Buchanon were awful, but c'mon now. It isn't really that close IMO.
Way too early to pick Kareem, unfortunately I cannot say he doesn't deserve to be on the list. Gotta go with Buchannon though, considering what we gave up for him and the expectations for him, he was a terrible CB who couldn't cover and couldn't tackle.
disagree...you can only base it on what you've seen. i've never seen a guy get repeatedly torched like this. not to this level. as that blog said, you can count on someone beating him over the top for a TD every game..sometimes it happens twice. he falls down at the line. he has no closing speed. he gets torched by practice squad folks. in the 8 games i've seen, i've never seen worse. i'm not exaggerating...that's honest impression.
This is exactly how I feel about Jackson. Not ready to say flat out bust yet, but it's clear he's not anywhere near ready to be starting. Not too mention he's being thrown into the fire with Kubiak's coaching staff and a defense that, even outside of him, is still pretty terrible. He also has nary a veteran corner to teach him anything. He may very well be a straight bust, but so far almost this entire defense is looking like one this year. As an aside, Can't Cover Brown has also gone on to piss off the fanbase of a few other teams as well.
Kareem is treading in Matt Stevens water but I'll give him more time, he couldn't be that bad as a first round pick, if so he will become an epic bust. Remove Jackson for the reasons above and it is Stevens by a mile: also, Pollard has to be coverage wise as bad as anybody ever. P-Burnt looked absolutely decent in the game I saw him play in this year, don't even remember the game but he looked well above servicable, looked pretty decent before we acquired him too.
Don't get me wrong, Kareem has been absolutely terrible. But I just don't think you can pick him as the worst DB ever with only 8 games under his belt. With that said, you are absolutely right in how bad he has been thus far.
Don't forget about the tried and true "he played for Nick Saban, so he's already NFL-ready" logic that was so chic for all the radio personalities to say before and immediately after the draft.
He was trash over here though. He was almost comparable to Kareem as far as how many times he would get toasted in a game. Stevens sucked, but he was only moderately terrible at coverage. He was however the worst tackling safety I've ever seen. He would get juked out by a FB and whiff on the tackle.
Not with a position like CB. Dunta wasn't even thrown into the fire like Kareem was. At least he had a Pro-Bowler on the other side.
He's definitely the slowest on the list. Should have just moved up to snatch Thomas and then we'd at least have our ball hawk safety.
