The largest disaster I personally experienced was the 1989 San Francisco World Series quake. The disaster that affected me the most was a wildfire when I was at school when I had to be evacuated from the dorms at 3 in the morning. It wasn't that big a deal to me. It was a Sunday so my roommate and I went to a sports bar and got drunk watching football (I moreso than he, since he was driving). The fire got within a few yards of my dorm building, but none of my stuff was damaged. We forgot to close our other roommate's window (he was out of town) and so his stuff got coated in a pretty hefty layer of ash. Several cars on the campus ended up burning as well.
Rode out Hurricane Alicia back in the 80's (don't remember it since I was very little) and Ike recently (wasn't bad at all where I live, other than lost power).
Hurricane Alicia -- it seemed like we made out ok until we surveyed the damage the next day. It took us several weeks to clean up all the damage and Alicia was not a major hurricane.
The worst natural disaster happened to me in no other place than Houston. I was relishing a chili dog at Sonic and it came out of nowhere. They say you remember exactly what you're doing when it happens and my memory is always razor sharp whenever I get flashbacks. I was just leaving the drive thru, an American specialty, glancing at my watch to see what the time was and out of nowhere, a 5'4, 200 lb blonde human jumped out of a pickup truck and attacked me. Oh, she was au naturale. Trust me. Enough junk for days. I don't know why, I don't know how, but all of a sudden the sun was blocked out and I witnessed a lunar eclipse as this hog stumbled towards me. Her mouth hissed and she clawed at my chili dog, suggesting that I had wronged her by eating her order. Normally I would dismiss such a loon but this woman was extremely passionate about her chili dog and adamant it was hers. I stuck my hand out like a weakling as she grabbed my order and ran away. She called herself Kayla, slut of Texas, w**** of the town. And this was known as the way of the drive thru. Every time I recall the incident, I wonder what I could have done differently to save the people I left behind in my car. But such is life.
I went through hurricane Alicia.. but I now live 20min from Vilonia, AR. That place basically doesn't exist anymore. If the path of the tornado was a little more south.. a whole lot of people would not be here today.
Damn, I was going about my merry way until I read this. Curse you for the memory Anyway, picked hurricane because typhoon wasn't an option.
Deckard: 1900 Hurricane. jk I guess mine would have to be Hurricane. Ike, and I barely remember it. I was asleep. Alicia. I was barely a kid.
The worst I've personally experienced wasn't even a hurricane, but Tropical Storm Allison, and I wasn't even in town for it. My mom lost her car and my grandfather's house was destroyed, along with every heirloom and personal memento we had in the family.
