Ugh, this one is easy for me. 1993 Oilers loss to the Chiefs. Yeah, the previous Bills playoff loss was a killer, but we had IMO, the best Oiler team ever in 93'. Unfortunately we were missing 2 great players who just happen to be injured before the playoffs Robertson and Slaughter. I remember Buddy Ryan saying M.Robertson was the best D-back he's ever coached and Slaughter was our most talented receiver (sorry Haywood). Anyways, that just crushed my love for football...the team was pretty much dismantled...then it moved, I haven't been very interested in football since.
I voted for the Frank Reich game. But for me, the worst moment didn't make the poll. The worst moment ever was November 1995 when Butt Adams announed that my Oilers were being moved to Freaking Tennessee. Munchak, Matthews, Givens, Fisher, Eddie George, Stepnoski.... *sigh* The Texans are great and all, but I *still* wish we had the oilers. That's *our* franchise in Nashville. That ******* took *Houston's* franchise history with him up there--*our city's* AFL championship trophy from 1960, *our city's* accolades, jerseys, retired numbers, etc. The titansonline.com website has in its history section some of the greatest (and most painful) moments in *Houston* sports history. Earl Campbell never stiffarmed the hell out of anyone in freaking Nashville--he did it here. In Houston. (end rant)
wow, this thread hurts. i voted for the oilers-steelers championship simply because it's the only sporting event i ever watched that actually made me cry (i was 9.) however, the devastation of the oilers-chiefs, oilers-bills and rockets-stockton absolutely crushed my soul. each of those events had me questioning why i even bother watching/caring about sports. since the steelers game happend at such a young age, i hadn't become quite so entrenched with my teams.
Game 6 vs. the Jazz for me. Not only did that shot ruin our chances at a championship for the next 5 years, it just had to be my most HATED sports team every.
Game 6 West Finals Jazz-Rockets (Stock's 3 pointer at buzzer) It's the only one I cared about.. PLUS the other two team havent won crap for this city..
I know it was a long time ago, but in my book 1960 counts. There wasn't a SuperBowl yet, so that was the top honors in their league, and the Oilers brought it home. Too bad I wasn't born yet to enjoy it.
That is why I think Butt Adams would win the poll of most hated sports figure in Houston history. He also is the reason the old scoreboard in the Astrodome was dismantled, thus effectively killing the Dome's status as a fun place to go for a baseball game.
Had the misfortune of watching each one of the candidates and have to vote for UH vs. NC State because: a)It was for all the marbles, not just a semifinal affair like the others b)I'm an alum ('76) that waited years for that moment c)We had to watch Valvano run around like a spastic for fifteen minutes afterwards, more in shock than anyone in the arena
The Oilers loss had the most damage, because my next door neighbor was a Bill's fan and we bet money on the game - I never lived it down. That was just a horrofic sinking day and I just felt really sick. I never thought TV could make me want to puke. That loss was so devestating I knew then the Oilers didn't have a future in the city. In fact, them leaving town and losing their name was a relief of sort - like a really sick animal passing away and you're just happy the misery is over. The sharpest pain was the John Stockton Shot. I mean, when that ball fell through the hoop, it was like being stabbed in the chest. I didn't know what happened - I was just stunned and confused for about 10 seconds. Third was the sweep by the Sonics in '96. The dynasty ended so painfully - and by our arch nemisis that we could never beat. At the time, the way they contained Hakeem - it was pretty tough to take. It was the end of that team in a way as well - the magic was quite never recaptured. I still remember the "I still believe" sign held by Turbo when we were down 15 in the 4th quarter. Fourth was the '86 series. It was just heartbreak after heartbreak, with the final deflation coming with Kevin Bass striking out. In fact, that was the first time I really felt pain from a sporting event. I remember the cougars loss to NC state - the airball dunk...but I was too young to really feel bad about it. The Brad Lidge giving up the homer really wasn't that bad. We were down late anyway, and Berkman hit that homer into the Crawford boxes and i thought to myself - that has to suck for Cardinal Fans. I mean, I chuckled - but it's no worse then the Green Monster. Anyway, if the 'Stros lost this series - it would have really sucked. It would have been up there. I'm glad it's not. Go Astros!
It's so tough to pick, I went with 83 cougars because I was a kid so I literally cried, but all the Oiler losses (vs. Denver, vs. Buffalo, vs. KC) all really were tough to take since my folks had season tix and I got really involved in the games. I remmember being so angry after buffalo, and the morning after that game, everything was sort of in a haze.
I picked the Oilers/Bills. My brother predicted the loss at half time, and I believed it. Then came the reality, sad day for Houston sports.
Tombstone "Damn, Doc! Why you doin' this?" "Wyatt Earp is my friend" "Hell, I got lots of friends" "I don't"
