All I know is that this is what went through my head last night as I tried to fall asleep (keep in mind I've seen about 80-90% of all Astros/Rockets games for the past 18 years or so) ...

"Is watching sports really worth it? Shouls I even watch the rest of the series with the chance of feeling this way AGAIN? Should I even watch the Rockets this season even though I just ordered NBA LEague Pass TODAY?"

This morning and today I've come to realize that hell yes it is worth it .. When we finally break through and make it (and one day we will), it will be even sweeter knowing what you went through to get there.

no way..the expectations weren't that high. they were just beginning.

it was disappointing....but nowhere near the level of those on this list.

This is painful, but the series isn't over. If the Astros fail then it will rank up there with 1980 for the Stros as being oh so close. I don't think you can be any closer to the World Series then last night. The Stros shouldn't have put themselves in a position to let Pujols do that to them.

At least when the Astros win tomorrow, it will be a short flight to Chicago. :D

My most painful memory, Phi Slamma Jamma getting beat by the Wolfpack. Althought last night was a very, very close second. I'm hoping it won't matter down the road and a good memory will make it meaningless.

One good thing is my wife is barred from the living room for game 6.
She's the reason we lost the freaking game anyway.
She NEVER watches baseball and then calmly walks into the living room and starts asking questions as Edmonds is being walked.
She says "Isn't that Albert guy good!"
I was like "JESUS CHRIST SHUT UP WOMAN!"
    BANG....HOMER!!!!!!!!!!!!

I yelled "GO TO YOUR ROOM!"

I love her...but GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!

Anyway...she won't bother then the rest of the series so the Stros should be just fine!!!

    83, no contest.

That shot was just so sudden. You couldn't see it coming. Yes, NCState spent the whole 2nd half coming back, but you just never thought they would actually win. I will never forget seeing Hakeem crying.

Think about what would be different had that shot not gone in. Guy V would be in the Hall of Fame. UH basketball may not have ever had 'the lean years' it had after that and still does.

That game is still my most depressing sports memory ever.

For me in terms of my emotional reaction, it was definitely close between the Stockton shot and last night. Honestly, I think last night was worse. I wanted it more, I felt it more, than the Stockton shot.

At least with the Rockets I could always look back and know we had 2 rings under our belt, and some great memories to carry me.

Just before the homer last night, I was on the phone with my brother, and we were reminiscing about all of the Astros teams and games we have watched over the years, and how everything was going to come to fruition after years of hoping. I was very vulnerable, and it hurt bad.

I had nearly this exact conversation with myself, as I'm sure many of us did. It's terrible that we can let something as simple as a game for boys affect us so deeply.

But yes, I agree. It's worth it.

    Every bit.

Ok I will admit it felt like I got kicked in the stomach last night when Pujols knocked the ball through the window over the train tracks.... and I do question why we even pitched to him in the first place.....but this is definitaly NOT the worst thing in sports history in Houston and heres why...

#1 - The Astros are not even supposed to be here, this whole season has been one mircale after another.....15 - 30 and now we are on the brink of winning the freakin' penant? Are you kidding me?

#2 - Who didn't think this was going to be a battle? The Cards are a great team with hitters up and down the entire lineup. Sure in hindsight it was a msitake to pitch to Pujols but lets give Garner and the boy some credit here. Lidge has been stellar thus far so you have to have faith in his ability here. Its unfortunate he made a bad pitch....and thats all it was a bad pitch, not the worst thing to happen in Houston sports.

#3 - The 92 Oilers were expected to win that game and had a huge lead only to allow the Bills to come back in less then two quarters. As a matter of fact all the teams in your poll except the current Astros were picked to win those games. The Astros are not even supposed to be in the postseason.

Although this loss hurt as a sports fan, and I'm sure the Astros felt a little pain too, we still have two more games to close it out with 2 of our best pitchers on the mound so I'm liking our odds. Just have to shake it off like we have all year and pull ourselves up by the boot straps and go kick some Cardinal butt... :D

Depending no how the next 2 games go, last night could have been the worst sports memory I've ever had.

I've never felt so depressed or upset over a trivial thing like this before.

    Exactly.

The Astros have 2 more chances to beat the Cards. The Oilers had no second chance.

Bobblehead, that is hilarious...but thanks for keeping her out of the way for game 6. we need all the help we can get.

my wife left the room for a minute then pujols goes pujols and when she comes back in she sees me just sitting there shocked staring at the ceiling, she's liked what happened? i couldn't say a word and she was like, is it that bad? she goes on to say all the right things, like it's just a game, there are still 2 games left. then i say to her this is 45 years of heartbreak (even though i'm 21), and i don't think i'm going to sleep well tonight.

Here is why I chose the game from last night over Oilers/Bills...

Back in 1993, we had the lead, and I was absolutely loving every minute of it. Slowly, the lead started fading. Eventually, the Bills catch up and the game goes into overtime...and then we lose. The whole process was drawn out, like a slow, painful death. That loss is something I will probably never get over. I was destroyed.

    Fast forward to last night...

One game away from the World Series, 4-2 lead, bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, 2 strikes, and Brad Lidge on the mound. How can you beat that? I have followed this team religiously since I was 9 years old (17 years ago), therefore, at this point of the game, my emotions are on an absolute high. I was literally on the brink of tears because I was so excited. I was thinking how awesome it was going to be when the game ended and I could watch Bagwell and Biggio pour the champagne...I was so happy for them. So, there I am, literally jumping up and down in my apartment...Eckstein single. Okay, thats nothing, we still got this thing. Edmonds, walk. Crap. Pujols...gone. Game over. I have never gone from such an emotional high to such an emotional low as quickly as I did last night. That is why I choose this game. Now, if the Astros pull this out, then the Oilers/Bills game retakes 1st place. However, if they dont, I really cant see myself ever ever ever getting over the game 5 loss to the Cardinals. Im still devastated and the ONLY cure for this is a World Series trip this year. Otherwise, I am doomed.

    Oilers - Bills, no question.

    ...and here's the reason why...

Of all the games listed, the Oilere-Bills game is the only one that is legendary to the entire sport. Whenever you catch an ESPN classic comment or show about "the greatest comeback ever", guess what game it is?

And every time the sports media plays "the greatest comeback ever", we all get to re-live the agony of watching our team completely fall apart...

...over, and over again.... year after year....

Voting for 2005 NLCS Cardinals-Astros (Game 5) is silly. It wasn't an elimination game. Sure, it prevented us from advancing, but we have two more chances to advance. The Cardinals comeback was certainly dramatic, but not miraculous.

I agree, actually it makes it better when we do eventually win. We had a miraculous play to end Game 4 they got us back in Game 5. It's going to be a fight to the end now. There are still two games left!
