What would have been the point of holding on to a disgruntled player who didn’t want to be there who didn’t prove he could carry a team anymore than Francis could? You guys act like Francis was a player who could only help a team to 30 wins. If that team wins 45 games a year which is very conceivable, it was worth it. Looking at the Magic, how much better would they be if the trade hadn’t of happened and they added Howard, Hedo, and Grant Hill. Is it really that much better than it is now? Maybe.
Disclaimer: All GM's make boneheaded decisions. I'll probably name one and get crucified for it, but here goes. This past off-season's Jerry West. Now before I get flamed, he gave Brain Cardinal 7 years and between 39-56 million. IMO that is way too much for that guy. Has lots of big contracts on that team with lots of years left. John Weisbrod, bad-mouthing your disgruntled player in public is very unprofessional. Pretty much made him look like a dumbass. He also overpaid for Hedo Turkgolu. Scott Layden- Enough said. Isiah Thomas- Screwed over the Raptors, and hurt the Knicks with several different moves. Chris Mullin- Gave alot of money to Richardson and Murphy, too elary to tell IMO.
we might as well call this the Scott Layden Memorial Award. he puts all others to shame with his moves. as for right now, even though i think isiah is both a dumbass and an *******, i've gotta give it to mullin. i mean, if there's one thing you absolutely should not do, it's tie yourself to massive contracts for role players as if they're actually important in the big picture. is troy murphy a nice player? is he worth a nice contract? yeah. is he worth close to 60M over 6 years? no. now you've signed a role player for 6 years and at about 3/4 of a max contract at that. terrible. jason richardson. is he going to win you a title or even get close? no. so you give a guy who can't shoot a max contract. derek fisher, is he a nice role player. yeah. do you give him 6 years when he's already on the wrong side of 30? hell no. at the full MLE. HELL NO! and then the crown jewel imo, adonal foyle. do you give a sorry center a huge contract. ummm, no. he's not even kelvin cato quality imo and cato's contract is already a little too big even with his improvement. foyle might be a nice guy, but you don't pay for niceness. he has tied this team of average role players down forever with max length deals for probably more than any of them could've gotten anywhere else and in most of the cases way more than they would've gotten anywhere else. i didn't even notice him sneak in the murphy/jrich contracts right at the deadline until someone pointed it out. was it really so pressing to lock those two bad boys up to huge contracts? let them be FA's. let them prove for another year they're worth that money. dumb dumb dumb. the Mavs assistant GM, LMAO Swopa.
I know there have been some bad moves made by GM's But SURELY Mullin is the worst? Anyone who gives a stack of money to Derek (backup) Fisher and Adonal (20 minutes) Foyle is nutso! MY brother is a Golden State fan - and we've been trying to figure out (for months) WHY oh WHY that ever happened! Can anyone explain? And if so, is it possible to prove that there is a worse GM??
Speaking of Mullin's bone-headed decisions, no one's even mentioned his hiring of Stanford's Mike Montgomery as the head coach. I don't care how many wins he's had over at Stanford; the NBA is a completely different animal and we've seen this time and time again with the failure of successful college coaches transitioning to the NBA.
LOL, yeah, I agree, Mullin is the worst GM ever. Hard to figure out any of the signings and moves that he made. Sad, he was a heck of a player in his day, probably a nice guy too.
I am surprised to see how people quickly have forgotten. Nobody mentioned Jim - Run Your Bussiness On Boozer's Word - Paxson!
I don't dislike the trade for Orlando because Francis sucks. I think he is a good player who can lead a team to 45 wins a year like he did in Houston. But I don't think he can do much more than that, mainly because his flaws cause so many problems for the team. Of course, Steve could fix those flaws, but I don't see it happening. Look at the quote from Magic coach in the Chronicle talking about Francis: "With any player or entertainer who is good at something, you have to allow for creativity. If you stifle the creativity, you stifle the player. But along with that is a discipline that's involved so that it's not totally freelance. It's like a jazz ensemble where the group all has to be in sync. But you also have some solo acts mixed in there. But ultimately that solo part comes back to join the group and functions as one." How long before Orlando gets tired of the solo act and the lack of discipline? Right now they are hopeful Steve can change. But so were Houston fans for about 4 years. Of course if that was the best offer Orlando had, this is all a moot point and it was a good deal. But I would think they had other good offers for McGrady.
carrol dawson should be name the worst gm the only good players he drafted is yao and uhhhhh cuttino the rest were garbage and most of players that he drafte aint even on the nba no moe. watch somone gonna bust out with "he got us tmac" or some bullsh!t like that, nigguh pleazzzzzzzzzzzz
LOL. Yet another example of how the Hangout and Game/NBA have different circles of posters. Everyone's eating up vaioavan's schtick in the Hangout.
