i think it just means that these countries treat thier people like shyt and behave like animals. the guy wasnt comparing blacks to neanderthals. so people just love to overreact. im surprised al sharton or jesse jackson hasnt shown up yet.
That really is tragic. Those are 19th century numbers for the industrialized world. Sub-35 is more like the early medieval centuries.
Get that crass nonsense outta here. "Top twenty" my foot. You people don't know how much you have it made. We're talking about countries were people kill rats to eat, and you're talking about America and top 20 GDP.
Amazing how almost all of those countries are in the southern part of Africa. This is what AIDS has done to that part of the continent. It is so widespread it isn't even funny. To give you a comparison, it's easier to find someone down there with AIDS than to find someone here in America with a cold.
I have traveled far and wide and I would not wish being born into poverty in a place like Bangladesh or the slums of Mumbai or Delhi on anybody. I don't know- I think I'd take North Korea over that easily.
Yep, and here's the icing on the cake. AIDS groups condemn Gambian president's 'miracle cure' Mbeki accuses CIA over Aids Slightly more unsettling to know that the latter of these two is democratically elected.
Depends on where you are. You go to Cape Town, and it looks like some European town stuck in Africa. You go to the outskirts of Johannesburg and you see horrid slums (Soweto). South Africa has a ridiculous income inequality situation. Some parts look absolutely amazing and sit like a jewel in Africa and the rest is just a reminder of the fact that much of Africa has a lot of issues to deal with.
You have got to be kidding me? Have you ever been to any third world counties? I have quite extensively and I can tell you that our poor are living high on the hog compared to these places. It always amazes me how people consistently complain about American and how we need more socialism, welfare, hand outs and this whole give a fish mentaliy. Name me one country where socialism has worked out? Socialism take the power away from the population and gives it to a small group (ie. the government) to decide what is best for them. Given the choice of "freedom" or "socialism", I'll take FREEDOM every time.
Where socialism has worked out? Denmark, Sweeden, UK, Venezuela. Socialism doesn't take freedom away from anyone. You dont' understand socialism. People can still start buisiness, work extra hours, earn extra money etc. If you try and tell the people of the UK or Denmark that they aren't free, they will laugh at you.
Actually US have a form of socilism too. Social Security Medicare are just two examples, I think people like socialism concepts just fine in this country too.
I am willing to bet that the country I spent 3 years living in as an adolescenct during the early 60's is a country poorer than you have ever lived in or most likely even visited. Hint: that country had no TV stations and only one radio station that was on for 8 hrs per day. It was in the Western Hemisphere.
Chuckle for the morning. This, of course is very true. The USA for instance would clearly be a better place to be born female than in Saudi Arabia-- controlling for such variables as income. I'd put the USA somewhere in the top 25 -50 on the being born female.
glynch -- i'm curious why you put the US so high. much of the world lives on less than $2 a day. about 8% of the world owns a car. many of our lower middle class own a car. they live on more than $2/day. we have social services, even if they're not as strong as many European countries, and most of the world does not. war is tearing many of these countries, in addition to extreme poverty and disease. while i'd certainly agree with you that we could and should do more to end poverty here and abroad, i disagree with your contention that the US is among the worst places to be born. am i misreading you? can you shed some light on your points for me?
