Yes, they should earn their playing time. However, the US national squad is not successful enough to ignore experienced players in games where experience can make a big difference. A road game in Honduras is a prime example.

Honduras is improving as a national side. Maybe it would have made less of a difference than you believe. It's tough to play there.

Exactly why you should, as a coach, eliminate variables where you can...like having an inexperienced back 4 that has never played together start this game. Not starting Boca was a mistake, plain and simple. I'm not his biggest fan by any stretch. I don't see him as a world-class defender that absolutely deserves to start every game. But, this isn't the time to experiment or to use as a learning experience. This is the last round of World Cup qualifying. If you want to experiment, do it in the friendlies and/or against Barbados.

Failure to qualify will set US Soccer back an unbelievable amount. It will be very damaging if the national team goes 8 years (assuming they qualify for 2018) without being in the national spotlight. You think it's hard to get the good athletes now?

Couldn't have written it any better than what you just wrote. My thoughts exactly.

As to Klinsmann's technical understanding, I think by now it shouldn't even be up to debate. Lahm commented on it previously and now w/this article, we're getting sorta confirmation that Klinsmann insistence on using his co-Bayern coaching failure- Martin Vasquez as his assistant is exposing his lack of technical/tactical nous.

    They'd better win in Denver.

ATW told us that Klinsman sucked as a manager, I tend to agree.

Why he is not on LDs doorstep telling him how important he is, is beyond me.

This team needs all of its best players to qualify.

If you need to convince a guy who doesn't even want to play soccer anymore to come save your team then there is a major problem with the program.

I think Donovan needed a break, probably been playing soccer since he was 12 or 13 non-stop.

Nothing wrong with that, but I also think that Klinsman should be in his ear telling him how special he is, and how important he is to the national team.

Because he brings something no one else on the team has with his creativity and passing, and this team needs that.

So f***ing what. Which professional player hasn't been. Hell, I'm not a pro and the only break I've taken from playing year around (outside of injuries) was when I was in junior high school and I played football one year. That was in 1987.

Please. I don't want anyone around who needs to be coddled like that. Yes, when his mind and body are right, he is very important to the team. It's clear that his mind is not right and that can show itself as a nasty infection throughout the pool.

I agree with this. He is needed...but only when he gets his head out of his vagina.

    Leroy,

Not everyone is like you or wired that way, and LD has certainly not shown that he is wired to win at all costs or die for playing, that does not mean we don't need him though, he is our most creative player by a long shot, and he plays with pace and smarts.

This team lacks all of that - and I know he is not Rooney or Rinaldo, but he is the best player in the USA, and we need him on this team to qualify, some players need coddling, some a boot in the arse.

At the end of the day, we just need him to qualify, and I honestly don't care how we get there, but we HAVE to get there.

He has just been activated lately at Bolton - and is not yet back to playing regularly, but is getting fit, I hope Jurgen calls him up soon, he is another player on Donavan and Dempsey's level when healthy, let's just hope he is not another O'brien.

The Brazil-Italy game is absolutely sick, 2:2 after 56 minutes. Balotelli with a tremendous goal.
