Morris Almond from Rice is the real deal. A pure scorer with a lethal shot. He should have won C-USA player of the year over Rodney Carney. Almond abused Carney when they played each other. Carney was actually guarding Almond and Almond dropped 30 on him. I don't want to hype up Morris too much, though, because I want him to go back to Rice for his SR season!

I wonder if the NBA is like other businesses in that sometimes they interview people as favors to other people. Say, some coach or agent calls the Rockets and asks them to give some player a work out. They do it not because they're interested in the player, but because they want to maintain a good relationship with that coach or agent.

Apparently we've worked out over 30 players.

We seem to be working out alot of point guards. What if we draft one?

I'm sure it happens all the time, but what's the harm in working people out? Our seasons over so we might as well get to work on the draft ASAP. We should take a look at all possible candidates.

We could do much worse with our 2nd rounder. The question is, having not hired an agent, what does Gibson expect?

By not hiring an agent, he keeps all his options open. If he has good workouts and believe a team will select him, he'll go for the draft. If he had bad showings and gets the feeling that teams aren't that interested, he'll withdraw his name and go back to school.

    From rikesh316...

Just to throw out some general thoughts on these guys...I've been saying on the College Board all year that I don't like what I see from Gibson. My guess is it was a hometown courtesy visit. He'd probably give Van Gundy a heart attack with his decision making. I think his upside right now is basically Lindsey Hunter - he can be a good shooter and a good backcourt pressure defender. Having 2 NBA level skills (shooting, defense) make him a fit on someone's bench, but we need defenders with size.

The first group of players is interesting. Except Ager (more on him), they're all 6-6 scorers. I've never seen Kinsey or Richardson. Richardson was a DII All-American. Trying to find what I can on him, but it seems like he can shoot - in 20 minutes against Lamar, put up 17 shots, including 4-5 from 3s. He was the 2nd best player (his teammate was DII PotY) on an apparently dominant (champion) DII team. No real stats available unfortunately, beyond averaging about 17-5 for the year. Can't imagine taking a DII guy at the top of the 2nd round (or Kinsey or Almond for that matter). Could be a look for a summer league/roster invite.

I'm a big fan of Maurice Ager as a mid-late first rounder (which we don't have.) Tremendous athlete and a good shooter. I think he'll measure out at a legit 6-4, so he'll be ok.

The 2nd group is odd. Dee Brown is Luther Head's old running mate...he's fast, a good defender, and can be a really good shooter...but he's small. I doubt he's the 6-0 he's currently listed. His percentages took a huge dip...from 49.9% FG% and 43.4% 3P% to 35.9% and 32.1% respectively. Similar things can be said of Allan Ray, who I think is as close as it comes to a Luther Head clone, but with even less point guard abilities. Absolutely zero reason for us to pick him, and kind of puzzling we even worked him out.

Novak and Davis have Van Gundy prints all over them. Novak is basically a Padge/Bullard clone. He should be around at the top of the 2nd round; while he'd be good value, I'd rather just sign Padgett and use the pick elsewhere. Davis on the other hand is a guy I think could be a really sleeper. He isn't very athletic, isn't much on defense, and will get the "slow white guy label", but I think he could become somewhat of a Troy Murphy type without quite as much range- he's an excellent defensive rebounder, has a solid post game, and a very nice touch. He shot 87% from the line this past season, which is outstanding for anyone, especially a 6-11 big man. I think he'd make a good value pick at the top of the 2nd round as a possible long term backup to Yao, and maybe even solution next to him.

Well obviously but what does he expect as far as draft position? Will it take guarenteed money to get him on a team? Does he just want out of Texas that badly.

    Here's some info from DraftExpress:
    http://draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?a=1304

hmmmmm, for some reason it won't let me copy the text, otherwise I'd post it on here.

Basically talking about PG's Rajon Rondo, Darius Washington, Daniel Gibson and Randy Foye working out for the Rockets.

What I found interesting was it said the Rockets' workouts have the reputation of being one of the most grueling and most physical in the NBA.

Looks like they brought in some shooting guards trapped in point guard bodies. I'd rather see them sign Mike James with the MLE, and use the pick on another position.

According to this he's measuring out at 6-5 in his workouts. Funny how one inch can mean so much. At 6-4 he's an undersized two guard, at 6-5 he's normal size (like Ray Allen, etc) and only an inch shorter than the bigger two guards.

Apparently the Rockets had a point guard only workout Friday. Gibson, Williams, Foye, and Rondo were the 4 pgs. Gibson had the worst workout. The Rockets liked Williams, but Foye was the best skilled out of them all.

Richard Roby worked out last week. The Rockets like him.

WE've worked out over 30 players.

Lyndsey runs the most grueling draft workouts out of any other NBA franchise. Apparently scouts get the most out of Rockets workouts.

Sorry the last pg was Washington, not Williams. We worked out Williams last week though.
