Funny thing is we would be doing the planet a huge favor if more people worked from home and less commuted. It should be the green trend for this century. The technology is there to do it. You don't need to sit in a room with other people. It may be more convenient if all people are at the same place and go meeting-to-meeting...but not really if you are utilizing the technology to do the same thing correctly. But, we talk a good game when it comes to saving the planet...the action part of it is more a ho hum...some day...approach, i.e. when it is too late. Like I read in an article earlier today, it's likely that people one hundred years from now will look back at these times now and think we should have been doing a lot more for the planet cause now it is truly f-ed up. I leave you with this. Think of all the single driver cars commuting to work daily in this country. You know...you can't even leave the house and go outside without inhaling all this crap. Is this a red day? Better stay indoors. Doh! Do we need face-to-face meetings in person? Certainly albeit a lot of these meetings could be converted to an online format with people remoting (obviously). Do we need everyone to be at an office building on a daily basis to do their jobs in person? Certainly not. I personally think there should be laws to force employers to make workers work at home for a debated period of time each week...as part of a green intiative. Don't want to do it? Well, explain to your kids...and they will be explaining to their kids...why the Earth is going to be a living hellhole in one hundred years. Oh...back then...everyone drove themselves to work for many decades and the total tally of that wreaked havoc on the environment over the years along with all the other pollution sources. Better get the electrics cars more mainstream...or we are going to have cars that won't start if you drive them over your hours allotment (as forced to do to restrict pollutants). P.S. Let's go start another war! The Earth would love that. Noone ever talks about green when it comes to war. Let's fight a hard war...but keep it green people! lol. But, we can't live without war...cause we all can't get along.
Here are the cons: 1. Internet traffic will dramatically increase. 2. World population will increase cuz couples will have more time for sex. 3. Economy will drop due to less productivity. 4. Food and travel industry will go down by more than 50% for sure. 5. Who's going to occupy the commercial offices? 6. Car industry will go down. 7. We already spent trillion of dollars on roads. and worse, NBA players will play basketball on PS3 online? . (j/k)
1. Traffic will not increase THAT much. 2. What? 3. No, better productivity and more time for work, better screening since working from home = more efficiency. 4. I doubt it people who work from home go out more than the average person because of being at home most the time. 5. So what? 6. People will drive more having to be in their home 8 hrs a day. 7. Again who cares? LOL
I have been working at home for the past 10 years. Every third month I will fly to various science labs across the country, but I'm only away from home for 3 days. The first few years it was great, but the last two years has been difficult for me. It is not fun being home every single day. When the economy gets a little better I will probably look for something else.
I've been doing it for the past 2 years....software development. It's nice for the most part. You have to be disciplined in order to get stuff done and it will make you stir crazy at times if you let it. When I first started I didn't think it would last, so I screwed around alot. These days I bust my hump in order to keep it going. Sometimes you lose sight of the line between home and work, so you end up putting in 70 hr weeks. All in all, I dig it. No commute, no stupid office politics, and you can plan your meals so you eat much more healthier. But I do miss the teamwork thing at times though....that synergy you get from grooving with a bunch of people all working toward a goal.
I'd rather spend my free time at the club or dorms. Don't know where you work but if it ain't the strip club I rather do what I do.
I came out of retirement to join a new high tech company. Director of Business Development for Image Metrics, we do all the in game cut scenes for GTA and facial animation for most of the AAA games coming out this Christmas. We also did the first 52 minutes of Benjamin Button....basically we record an actors performance on video etc, and map it to a 3D rig. Pretty cool stuff really. DD
I have been working from home for the last 1.5 years. I think I've become spoiled. I wear a t-shirt and boxers to work every day. I use my lunch break to work out at the gym. If I have plans in the evening, I'll start working at 5 or 6 am and knock off around 3 or 4 pm. Or the other way around. If I had a late night, I'll start working at 10am and work till 7 or 8pm but most importantly - I am much, much, MUCH more productive than I ever was in an office. I never realized how much time I wasted in b.s. conversations with employees who would stop by my office to say "good morning" or "good afternoon" and then we'd go off on a 45 minute discussion about "andre johnson vs calvin johnson" or "did baggy do 'roids?" Another plus is i never drive my car anymore! big savings on gas b/c i drive what could be termed a gas-guzzler. on the weekdays i ride my bike to the gym and on weekends we use my girlfriend's car to get around.
I'm technically designated a "mobile" employee which means I can work from home (or anywhere else for that matter) if I don't come into the office. I don't have an assigned cubicle at the office, but I go log into a station and I can work from there on the days I go in. Since most of my team isn't on-site, our team meetings would be virtual, so I can do that from home. Also, our training has become more and more virtual through web meetings and whatnot. So the benefits of staying at home are real. You get to work earlier, save time, money, and wear and tear on your car by not having to commute (office is 45 minutes from the house). I'm also on the road ~25% of the time, so that can be a grind, but it's the life you sign up for when you're in sales. I do find myself going into the office a lot more than my co-workers simply because I think it gives me good executive exposure. Also, my wife works in the same area of town, so when I go into the office, we can carpool and take the HOV lane into work. The only real downside to working from home, is having her drive to and from work by herself. It doesn't make for a happy camper when she gets home. So to Prince's point number two, that only works if your wife is also at home!
Almost 10 years for me. If I were younger, maybe I'd get bored, miss interaction with others, etc., but right now, it's the COOLEST! With the office "down the hall" I get a ton more work done. Most of my work is creative so jumping on the computer for an idea at any time of day is quite beneficial...I don't have to wait till I get to the "office". PLUS, I can cut the grass early any morning and still get to work "on time". And I can make those 3pm happy hours! It's cool.
Anyone know any other good work at home jobs? I have good tech experience with web hosting and web sites, as well as computers in general. I checked out WestAtHome and LiveOps but looking for something a bit more informal/easy to get into and more web tech support based.
I HATE you guys working at home. I'm young and could care less about co-workers and having people to talk to. I need to find a work at home job. Texasfight, your post made me green with envy.
