I got a co-op with the IRS. The only problem is I don't know if I want to work for them after graduation. Does anyone work for or know what it's like working for the Federal Government? I'd jump on this right away if it was a regular summer internship Thanks
You should watch stranger than fiction with will ferrell. He's an IRS collector and lives a pretty boring life. Though I'm sure real IRS workers live more..."colorful" lives.
She just sent me an email with my starting salary... Let's just say I can live without a life and friends for a while
Federal Job means 9-5, Little Overtime, lots of Holidays, good benefits,...crap...I need to find a Government job...
I hope you get the job at the IRS, then you can hook us up with some sweet under the table IRS deductions when the time comes.
govt jobs are nice, in that once you are in you are in. you have to be pretty stupid to get fired. that being said, the bureaucracy gets old.
Working a professional job for the government means that you: 1. Will make lower than true market salary. 2. Have an easy, boring job. 3. Will always get a raise based almost completely on tenure. 4. Will have excellent benefits. 5. Never get fired unless you do something completly dumb (sexual harassment, felony, assault a coworker, steal, etc.)
as he gets older, he will have a LOT more friends. Everyone wants to be friendly with someone in the IRS.
I have a friend who has worked for the IRS for almost 20 years. He actually likes it. Good pay. Good vacation. Good benefits.
Let me tell you how it will be There's one for you, nineteen for me 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman Should five per cent appear too small Be thankful I don't take it all 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman If you drive a car, I'll tax the street If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat If you get too cold I'll tax the heat If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet Taxman! 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
You should watch "Stranger Than Fiction" for reference. Be sure to listen to that voice in your head.
I decided between a federal government job and working at Microsoft and I think I definitely made the right choice going with the government. Good Benefits, decent pay (although you do lose something here), little to no overtime, no mass layoffs like in private industry = much less stress for me and more time for my family which are much more important to me than a little extra pay. The drawbacks are that you have to put up with all the bureaucracy and it can be very frustrating trying to get things done at times. It's also frustrating when you work with some people that really deserved to be fired. Job security can work both ways. One difference for you might be if your job is in Washington DC as I assume it is. I work in San Diego, but you could never get me to work in DC no matter what the job is.
I've always wanted to drop the "actually...I'm an auditor for the IRS" line when some dingbat at a party gloats about cheating on his taxes or working under the table.
This is actually in Dallas. Can you also elaborate on the decent salary and losing something part. I didn't quite understand My training is in DC though and apparently I'll be traveling a lot
