This is depressing but in the Midwest it's been happening for decades. At least among middle class whites there should have been a lot more engineering, IT and finance grads over the last 40 years; not sure how the tech revolution and large scale i-banking/asset management didn't originate in Detroit or Chicago.

While it is true a majority of the GM vehicles built in China will be sold in China, a large number will be sold in other countries and sent back to the United States. Every vehicle that returns here or is sold in nearby markets like Canada and Mexico hurts domestic auto/parts workers.

Also, once the plants are built, there is little to stop the Chinese from nationalizing the plants, probably as a confiscation for the default of U.S. interest payments to China for their share of our $16 trillion debt.

How should Obama intervene to stop this - and why should he? As per the article you posted this poises GM to increase its lead as the largest manufacturer of autos in the largest market in the world. While I was against the auto industry bailouts, this appears to be quite the victory for Obama.

And how do you reach the conclusion that any automobiles manufactured in China will be marketed here in the US?

    Here's an idea:

But alas, the fear of socialism is too deep rooted. So maybe next generation, when there will be even less to lose.
