I almost forgot: I cannot stand internet abbreviations. I am dismayed when I witness someone who I previously respected using "LOL". First of all, it's not even something you would spell out. Poster 1: *random joke* Poster 2: laugh out loud! Second of all, it's ridiculous, and it's highly annoying. Why can't you just spell out something that is akin to laughing, such as "haha" or "hehe" or anything besides "LOL"?
My peeves are more with the way some people pronounce certain words mainly harassment and penalize. I don't care what the dictionary says - you sound like an idiot to me if you pronounce harassment as "harrisment". Same thing with penalize - it makes my skin crawl to hear someone pronounce penalize as "PEENALize"...*shudders*
"I'm just saying..." You can insult the hell out of someone and when they get pissed, you just say "well, I'm just saying..." You're a fat disgusting inbreeding hillbilly butterhog and your Mother smells like tuna! What did you say?!? Well, I'm just saying. Oh, OK. For a minute there I thought you were trying to insult me but you were just saying...
The Newsmedia constantly makes this mistake. When talking about a person on whether they are "guilty" or "not guilty" too often they say the person pled "innocent" to the charges. No one pleads "innocent". They are either "guilty" or "not guilty". The media needs to stop spinning the "not guilty" term into "innocent". Sorry, my wife is a lawyer and I hear this all the time.
I hate that one, too. I mean, when you say it, it's one thing, but actually type it like that?? Doesn't make any sense! Oh, and the incorrect spelling "consistant". It bugs me.
I got really sick of all the stupid journalists thinking they were so cool reporting from Doha, Qatar, pronouncing the word Qatar like cutter. Also, the constant use of the terms "shock and awe" were very annoying. How else do we fight wars, with "Schlock and Aww, shucks?"
I like it when people on a bbs (or in life) misuse some words/phrases but then make a big deal about other words/phrases being misused. Or when people are annoyed by a "misuse" that really turns out to be a result of their own ignorance. I don't hate it, I find it all entertaining.
