Another bit of good news garnered... apparently you can use any standard VGA monitor with the G4's. It doesn't have to be something proprietary... woo hoo... I happened to have a 17" monitor lying around. [IMG]

I'm smellin' G4 in my immediate future...

If I were you, DoD, I'd wait a few months at least. The reason is OS X. Wait for them to get enough of the bugs out. When they have it to an acceptable level, they will start shipping all Macs pre-loaded with OS X.

Thats what I'm going to do anyway.

River, it depends on what your price is, you can get a solid iMac (new) right now for about 700-900. If you wanted to go lower too you can find them for 400-600, they are a little lower but still have the basic needs.

One of the main selling points of Macs is one of the main things I love about them: Longevity.

The first Mac I had I got in 1993. It was a Macintosh Quadra 610 with a 68040-based (non-PowerPC) processor at 25mhz, 8mb of RAM, and a whoppin' 155mb SCSI HD. I used that thing for 5 years; not only did I simply use it, I continued to upgrade the software for it, and it ran fine. The only hardware mods I made were adding an additional 16mb of RAM and a ZIP drive from Iomega. I ran the most up-to-date OS all the way up to Mac OS 8.6, and I was able to keep most of my third-party software up-to-date as well.

My roommate in college at this time was absolutely anti-Mac, making most of the same software claims that you have, and this was at a time when the software gap was a lot larger than it is now. After he had upgraded his processor twice, replaced his HD three times, and it finally broke down yet again, he had to use my old, slow, Quadra 610 for a period of about 4 months. He has an iMac now.
