I honestly didn't know layaways still existed. Haven't heard that term in 20 years.

i recall reading a story in the NYT several years ago, about a christmas morning sighting of a long black limo. it drove around town, and stopped each time a homeless person spotted. the rear window would roll down, and an old woman's arm would extend, holding a $100 bill which she'd hand off.

and they'd drive in search of the next one.
