    very true.

on a related note, i remember reading that Cici's pizza used to cut the price of their buffet in half 10 minutes prior to closing. all that did was encourage the customers to wait until 10 til to come in.

I gave this homeless dude $1 and got cussed out cause I didn't give him $2. If the restaurant owner start giving out free left over food, they will come back and ask them why they are not getting the fresh ones.
There are too much risk involved for a business owner to donate left over food to homeless people: lawsuit, PR, and cost of labor to monitor.
It is better to donate some money and forget about the food.

What's so difficult about it? Contact a homeless shelter/charity and let them know you would like to donate food that would otherwise be thrown out. Schedule weekly pick-up times, and at close put the leftovers in the freezer. When they pick up the food, have them fill out a form stating how much they received from the restaurant. Then the restaurant can actually get a tax credit for charitable donations for food that would have otherwise been nothing but a loss...
