We’ve all heard of drugs being smuggled in everything from baby diapers to fake gas tanks, to wrapped in condoms and swallowed. Now, add breast implants to the list.

Spanish authorities said they arrested a Panamanian woman trying to smuggle cocaine into the country by using breast implants as a stash, according to the Guardian and other news outlets. The woman was a passenger on a flight coming in from Colombia.

“The interior ministry said on Wednesday border police had noticed fresh scars and blood-stained gauze on the woman’s chest and pale patches beneath her skin. The woman said she had recently had breast implant surgery.

Officers were suspicious and sent her to a local hospital where the implants were removed and found to contain cocaine, the ministry added.”

Here is how it was reported by El Periodico.com, in Barcelona (Spanish language article)

Perhaps one day we’ll hear more about why this woman would take such a risk to her life. Perhaps others have tried and died without authorities ever learning of the scheme, such as the risks faced by so-called “swallowers,” who traffic in heroin by swallowing pellets and carrying them in their stomachs. One breaks – and they’re dead of an overdose.

As strange as this latest round of smuggling seems, it might not be that unique.*Here is a story from last year on a model in Rome who was caught smuggling cocaine in booty implants.

Spain seems to be having all the variety these days. Last year, authorities there found cocaine smuggled in a load of plastic bananas.

Reading that last line in the same context of drugs being smuggled in implants makes me wonder. Bananas? Or...' Bananas'?
