Companies are selling Juneteenth branded products. Here's why that's a big problem https://www.npr.org/2022/06/17/1101017257/juneteenth-products-companies-problematic
So Vader didn’t kill Reva because the woke public would call him racist? This dude used the Death Star to blow up a whole planet @J.R.
Why Roe v. Wade’s demise – unlike gay rights or Ukraine – isn’t getting corporate America to speak up https://theconversation.com/why-roe...-getting-corporate-america-to-speak-up-185940
My "friend" Barack Obama doesn't like woke virtue signaling either. I still like him a lot, personally! Even more after this statement.
All these companies virtue signalling to sell their products. Next thing you know is that car companies will be using Independence day to sell cars. How dare they! Spoiler
While Elon does work for his causes, the main thing that rankles people without a partisan bent are the stones he casts. He likes having his cake while throwing it at others too, which can be considered humanly normal but doesn't fit the hero image he loves cashing in on. As for what Obama is saying, part of it is the digital era (likes/unlikes for clout), but another part is this postmodern era of weaker traditional identities. Most Americans used to identify as predominantly Christian. Without that, secular nationalism promoted Americanism. After Bush, there was a intentional divide between what Americans were, Palin's "Real Americans", and what Americans should be. Even the American Dream has taken its lumps post-GFC, and that also diminished our faith in governments, financial institutions (trust banks with your investments!), "greedy" corporations who underpay or downsize long time workers, and notions of a strong work ethic. With social media spreading news, there are notions of post truth politics and the intense and unforgiving scrutiny of existing institutions that are simultaneously grilled and hoisted as being infallible. The flood of different identities prevents one to bind us all together and many aspirational identities promoted in the mainstream as glamorous or heroic lack any grounding pillars for an individual to grow or thrive under pressure, nuance or uncertainty. So we opt for fluffy "wellness" slogans and stress tolerance/acceptance among the differing voices. It definitely lowers the bar since we're on the edge of someone reporting or dinging our reputation for anything not blessed by prevailing feelings that can appear arbitrary without further thought or inspection. Corporations are definitely the last place that should promote virtue signaling, especially half century to century old companies like Coke, but they do it to placate customers who could conceivably cancel them for their racist pasts or even their rigidly white corporate hierarchies. The other component behind Obama's words is that it's also a soft bluff by customers since corporate branding can be more powerful than fleeting internet disgust. Most black people still drink coke even if they knew its history. I'm sure more than enough Woke folks still eat Chick Fil A given how insanely profitable their restaurants are. No one's been successful at canceling Nestle despite how objectively evil and exploitive they have and continue to be.
Some folks are so far into the woke vs anti woke that they think Obama and Elon are saying the same thing. Obama would very much be against DeSantis.
