hooroo, you still need the minimum cap hold to fill out the 12 roster spots. A second round pick is treated much the same way as an undrafted. Here is a link to the relevant section in Coon's CBA FAQ: http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q14
Don't forget to DEDUCT the cap hold amount from one of the slots that Dwight slides into. If you do that, your total cap hit with TWO "cap holds" (for slots 11 and 12) will be 58,315,800. This will likely be UNDER the new salary cap. Even it's not, as you mentioned, you can waive and stretch White, which would take the total cap hit down 1,146,320, according to your figures - bringing the total cap hit WITH Dwight to 57,169,480 (which includes the two cap hold slots - but doesn't include the Honeycutt or Fisher holds as I can't remember what those are, if any - but they certainly aren't enought to throw us over the cap). Trust me, if the Rockets didn't have room, Bima would have made this clear to everyone already. I'm no cap expert, but from using your own figures, we'd have enough room to sign him - especially if the cap increases just a little bit. Then, I assume, we're able to use all the alloted "exceptions" as well.
I may have failed to add a cap hold amount for White's roster spot - but, we'd still be fine. ANY room is PLENTY of room....lol.
That would have been fine, since in that scenario Patterson could have helped the Rockets get to the 2nd round this past year and become a more attractive destination for free agents.
Stein just tweeted possible early signals of cap increasing to just 58.5M (as opposed to expected 60M)..... Still have room! https://twitter.com/intent/user?screen_name=ESPNSteinLine
Yes, but it gets more complicated. Now to create room we gotta trade TRob, Royce White, and release James Anderson or throw in Greg Smith in a trade. Boy, I can see Greg Smith and RWhite in TWolves uni next season. Jes say'n.
Thank you so much HTown! Great find! And thanks for picking up my mistake, I included the cap hold for White after he is waived. You're right. We have enough cap room if we move T-Rob and waive and stretch White. However, waiving and stretching White seems a little drastic as he is on his last guaranteed year. Could just ask Dwight to shave $513,000 off his super max contract. Cap Hit after stretching White, working with Stein's $58.5 million 1) Harden 13,663,558 2) Asik 8,374,646 3) Lin 8,374,646 4) Parsons 926,500 5) Howard 20,513,178 6) Beverley 788,872 7) Jones 1,551,840 8) Montiejunas 1,422,720 9) Cap Hold 490,180 10) 2nd Rounder Cap Hold 490,180 11) Cap Hold 490,180 12) Cap Hold 490,180 *White 573,160 (waived and stretched) *Honeycut partial guarantee 100,000 Total Cap Hit = 58,357,182
I hope that if Dwight is already willing to come, then he'd be willing to take like $900k less so that we can keep Greg Smith...
Great. Now that the extra cap hit due to Robinson's higher salary and the $100K dead money owed to Tyler Honeycutt, not to mention Robinson's lack of showing progress, are even more likely to cost us. People are going to really ask the Rockets to give up something to take on both of the 2012 busts, Robinson and Royce.

Hm, in the other Howard thread, just saw that Smith's contract is fully unguaranteed? Somewhat confused which it actually is now. If it is partially guaranteed, guess we'd have to move him (tough) or ask Dwight to take a small paycut (which is great because we could keep him too). If fully unguaranteed, problem solved White will most likely be waived and stretched. I mean, if it is hard to move TRob...
Sorry, this was the link I saw. The site could be unreliable, I don't know. (scroll over GSmith's name) -- isn't he moving into his THIRD yr, not his SECOND? http://data.shamsports.com/content/pages/data/salaries/rockets.jsp
Someone else already mentioned this, but in studying the salaries, cap holds, projected salary cap, etc., I could see Morey attempting to move T. Jones as well as Robinson. Again, no cap expert, but Harden, Asik, Lin, CP, T.Jones, D-Mo and Bev account for 35,891,654 next year. That's only 7 players, so add the 490,180 cap hold for four slots (and the 100K hit for Honeycutt) and it takes you to 37,852,374. (I assume you only have to be charged for four slots as opposed to five since you're offering a contract to Dwight, which makes 12 spots). Now, this is assuming T-Rob is traded. But, this doesn't take Royce White into consideration. While I don't believe the Spears' (or Carl's) speculation that "no one" wants Robinson, I DO believe that we couldn't GIVE Royce away - even if we sent enough cash to cover his contract. So, if the Rockets are unable to get something done there with the legal process - which I highly doubt - they may be forced to trade T. Jones - as apparently, if you believe reports - they tried to do at the deadline. Someone mentioned this earlier, but knowing Morey, throwing out the leak regarding Robinson just to get feelers and callers - all while he knows he'll then "sweeten the deal" with Jones - may be his thinking all along. So, if Robinson is the only one traded, and White is waived and stretched, we must add 573,160 to the above mentioned 37,852,374, which brings us to 38,425,534, leaving the Rockets with 20,074,466, or 438,712 short of offering Dwight the "max". However, if T. Jones is traded in addition to T-Rob, it frees up 1,551,840. If this were to happen, I could see Morey then keeping either Smith or Anderson as opposed to having to waive them both prior to formally making the offer to Dwight - and likely trying to re-sign whichever was let go after Dwight signs. Capologists, feel free to correct any mistakes...lol.
To clarify, no one mentioned Morey likely leaking the T-Rob stuff knowing he'll then try to "add Jones". (althought someone DID mention they felt either T. Jones or D-Mo would also be traded either in this thread or another of the Howard threads) What I meant was someone had already mentioned Morey never does a straight up "easy trade/deal" and there's always multiple pieces involved it seems.
Morey is not the one leaking info about shopping Robinson. Morey is just desperately trying to dump Robinson and front office people from the other teams leaked it to Woj.
Very well could be the case - or is likely. Still also likely that Morey may be planning on including other pieces, especially if necessary. And, if reports at deadline were accurate (not saying they were), that would likely be Jones.
I don't know how much of a secret it is that the Rockets want to gain cap space. Morey is pretty open about what Rockets want to make sure he gets best offer.
Yes, great plan HTown. Your idea is simpler and therefore more feasible. Only thing is I prefer to trade D-Mo than T-Jones. I think T-Jones has more upside. I think T-Rob / T-Jones or D-Mo package is much more attractive and I think we can get a future first round instead of just a second round (for T-Rob alone). Although difficult, if we can get White's $1.7m off our books by sending $2.1 m cash allowance to a team for 2nd round pick, that would help the most. I really want to keep Smith and Anderson too. The room exception of $2.6m can be split between multiple players. This may allow us to bring many of the non-guarantees back after we sign Howard.
That's just Carl displaying, yet once again, his absolute HATE of the Patterson trade.... ("desperately trying to dump" Robinson...lol) Man, and I thought I hated the O.T. for Drexler trade! (shows how wrong I was though, huh!?) I think Carl may hold on to this one the same length of time as it's been since that trade went down, and brought us the second championship.
