Love JVG, but somehow cannot see it working with him and Harden.

This isn't Danuel House or Gary Clark.
This isn't the RGV Vipers head coach.
This isn't some rookie, 1st-year head coach.
    One-year incentive based contract? GTFO!

    https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sp...e-D-Antoni-final-season-contract-13907863.php

The Rockets had offered only a one-year extension, heavily based on incentives, according to a person with knowledge of the offer. D’Antoni told Rockets general manager Daryl Morey and owner Tillman Fertitta that he would like to coach for three more years, but was willing to have just one season added to his current contract.

Talks broke down over having that one season based on performance-based incentives tied to next season.

The Rockets had already told three assistant coaches and additional staffers they would not be brought back next season. Efforts to retool the coaching staff had largely been put on hold while determining whether D’Antoni’s contract would be extended.

Not a great start to the Tillman era. Running a basketball team is different than donating 2 million to pay for Dana Holgorsen.

At least we can all drown our sorrows at the Joes Crab Shack or whatever god awful restaurant Tillman is putting in there.

From what ive heard on news and podcasts, Tillman wants MDA in while Morey wanted to replace him and so firing his assistants was a way to get MDA to quit.

@Clutch IMO this is a very big deal IMO no quality assistant would ever wanna work under a lame duck coach unless they are next in line

Fertitta can't fire Morey for now because there is no better GM at this moment, probably never will for a long time.

Conundrum. We are not the Lakers so the Power Struggle is only quiet and not as 'loud' and dramatic.

Morey has to let coaches coach and not implement his system.

Intrigued to see what a potential new coach would deal with Morey's interferences.

What do you take away from the rumorus about Jimmy Butler not going to the Rockets but rather the Lakers because of his conversations with LeBron?

    Not many...

BUT, the top 5 teams that are best comparisons for the Rockets would be 90s Blazers, Jazz, Sonics, Knicks, 2000's Pacers, Nets, Suns. 2000's Cavs with Lebron would have been that, too... he of course left on his own, because the writing was on the wall... they weren't going to get there.

Sure, there are Dirk's Mavs, and Hakeem's Rockets. bear in mind Dirk's Mavs went through 3 coaches and many variations around Dirk, and made it to the Finals on coach two / year 6 of their playoff run .. but sure, they're an example. Hakeem made a Finals early in his career. Multiple playoff runs that ended early. Of course he had a couple injury snafu's at one point. MOST relevant in the Hakeem example, to me, is that Rudy came in and got Hakeem to change his mindset. It's actually pretty similar to James... who, regardless of what he says or thinks, his style of play on the court speaks to not trusting teammates enough, not being 100% perfectly conducive to winning in the clutchest playoff moments.

Aside, the late 80s Pistons were in the Finals in year 5 of that playoff run and won it in years 6 and 7.

Anyway, there are more "perhaps they should have tried something different" examples than examples where it worked out. Where it did work out, in those cases the team had typically gotten further, sooner.

But given James' defensive improvements, perhaps this coaching issue speaks exactly to the fact that if you aren't going to "end it", you need to change it meaningfully. With it being more than just the pieces around the superstar, but the way the superstar is attacking the game.

Keep in mind, the Rockets are going into Year 8 with Harden. I get it... the ring may come in year 12 for all we know (doubtful given age)
