Hiring McHale does not give the Rockets that much publicity and it definitely won't be magnifying to the National media. If we hire him it will only be relevant to Houston fans.

"Olajuwon goes through Walton likes he's not even there..." :)

I remember a bunch of those plays, including the reverse jam after stripping parish, and the baseline jam on missed shot by petersen.

Interesting, no? I had the same reaction, like those images and memories were still kicking around in my brain somewhere, unbeknownst to me. Very fun video, except for the final score, and except for watching the non-Hakeem parts of the 1986 Rockets in the finals that year.

I just can't forgive so easily. I will like the Rockets less if McHale ends up being their coach. They guy is a turd, and unless he expresses regret for who he was on those 80's Celtic teams, I'll never have a positive outlook towards him.

Loved the clip, despite the score. Those too young to really remember this series are in for a treat. Heck, it's worth watching for a glimpse of what Robert Reid could do on defense and offense while playing "out of position" at the point. Reid never had a problem getting the ball to Olajuwon or Sampson on the low block, had some very high assist numbers (17 in game 5!), and played terrific defense.

I always thought he'd be a great big man coach, but I've got serious questions about the coaching ability of a guy who was known as a black hole. Dude didn't pass once he got the ball down low.

That said, if he is the next coach, I wish him the best.

My guess is that as a former GM, McHale was able to alleviate the Rocket's concern with having a coach believing in and understanding roster moves.

Not that McHale was a stellar GM, but he understands the need to develop young talent for the long term benefit of the team and was able to express that to the Rockets.

I would be on board with McHale if he is hired.

Is Hakeem the greatest player in NBA history? I think there's an argument.

That's why I was against someone like Elie or Cassell getting hired and bent over by Morey/Lessy, just like most other Rocket legends over the years.

Understand that the owner wanted Rick gone early in the year because he thought Rick was preventing the Rockets from winning. Rebuilding and trying to make the playoffs are mutually exclusive. Rebuilding and asset building are not the same thing. Yao Ming should not be in the conversation at all no matter what you call it. I think you're giving the org a little too much credit here by reading into their actions what makes the most sense, when I think it's as simple as the owner didn't like the coach and wanted him gone.

Les Alexander simply hasn't said much on this topic, so all we have to go on there is rumors. I'm sure Les was unhappy with the poor defense and missing the playoffs again, but I don't think disappointment with the record is the primary reason they didn't keep Adelman.

My reading of it is based more on what Daryl Morey has said.

You mean the guy you said wasn't a straight shooter in this very thread? That's what you're basing your opinion on?

Yes. If he was a straight shooter, I wouldn't say my reading of the situation is "based more on" what he said. There is a bit of reading between the lines, but I think I can gather more truth from that than from some rumors about the owner wanting Adelman gone.

Kevin McHale if indeed is the next Rockets coach I will wait and see what his coaching staff will include. I hope he gets ex Rockets or D minded coaches.

FYI : I posted (and watched) all 6 videos of this series on page 3 of this thread. Man, that brought back some memories. Everytime I see people talk about how great Amare or the next dunking phenom is, I'll remember the grounded McHale and how he could turn people inside-out. Of course, if I wanted to see Amare combined with McHale, I'd just look at Hakeem.

So...I've been thinking: Who is the modern day version of McHale? I can't really think of one. Zach Randolph, Luis Scola and Al Jefferson come to mind but none of them has the complete offensive package, and none of them play D like McHale.

It would be nice to see Elie on the supporting staff.

So you're going to put your "reading between the lines" of a non-straight shooting GM's words against a rumor leaked by Clutch and call it truthier?
