Even if it they can only give away 7 first-round picks this Summer, that still doesn't change the whole point of our dialog that the Celtics have more than enough to do a Kevin Love deal, and still have a pick or two left over to attach to Wallace if they NEED to move him as an expiring contract next Summer, and we aren't even discussing 2nd round picks.

-Regardless, as I said earlier, even with Wallace, Rondo (extended), and Love on their books, they can still be smart and plan ahead to preserve cap space in 2015 and make a run at another free agent. If they are moving Jeff Green in the Kevin Love trade package (which is what I'm assuming) they can have between 15 and 20 million in salary cap space depending on whatever rookie & vet deals they have on the rest of their roster.

Only thing that could stop them from having cap space is if they made a signing this Summer or they are able to take back more salary in another trade.

-However.... Knowing Ainge my guess is he's probably going to be more focused on making a secondary trade instead of letting Rondo & Love wait a year to sign someone else. I would be willing to bet that if he trades for Love, he already has other deals lined up to follow.

Again as always... I dont really understand what your point is in fighting me on this. Anyone underestimating the Celtics position to trade for and keep Kevin Love is exposing extreme cocky homer-ism. The Rockets trade package in comparison just doesn't compete even though I'm sure in a perfect world Kevin Love would be better off with the Rockets if you could just plug him in at PF I'm sure.

I wouldn't assume they are moving Jeff Green in a Love package. This is of course assuming Love wants to go to Boston.

If Love isn't coming... hopefully he's going to Boston to recruit McHale on behalf of the Celtics franchise.

Id be surprised if they didn't. The Wolves are going to need salary back, and that's about the most useful salary they can take back with a player that helps them somewhat or can at least be flipped.

If you dont put Green in the deal you almost certainly have to put in Wallace, and I dont see any reason why the Wolves would opt to go with a much less useful and washed up talent.

-Love doesn't have the power to veto a deal by any stretch this Summer. Now if Wolves decide NOT to bite on a deal on draft night - July, and take this down to the trade deadline(which I do anticipate), Love has a lot more leverage because he'll have a much clearer statement to make to the Wolves about where exactly he's going in free agency so they really have no choice unless there are multiple options (which I'm assuming is the case) where the Wolves can trade him to a team like Chicago or Houston instead and get roughly the same trade package in February that they can get this Summer.

That's why I've been saying from the beginning that if you are a Rockets fan having heart palpitations because your overwhelmed with excitement about the notion of trading for Love, you should root for a Kevin Love trade to go down to the trade deadline in February.

If a team (like the Celtics or Cavs) blow Flip Saunders away with a deal this Summer, you can forget the idea of Kevin Love in a Rockets uniform. They just can't compete with trade offers this Summer. They NEED leverage and they wont be able to get that until February.

-All that being said, I'd be shocked if Morey had the patience to wait till February to gamble on Kevin Love coming their way. There is still a ton of competition for a Love deal even in February. If Morey gets the chance to bring in an impact player this Summer, I would guess he's going to bite the bullet and forget about Love(maybe I'm wrong and he does have the patience... but id be surprised). Love has always been a long-shot from the get go. Rockets fans are a little delusional when it comes to acquiring a player that so many teams are going after and how competitive their offers & cases to Kevin Love will be.

dobro,

that was a stupid statement. We're having a conversation. I simply pointed out to the poster (who happened to be you) that there are only 7 picks available for Boston to trade and they are all most likely mediocre picks. Because the poster (who happened to be you) was insinuating that Boston had 10 picks they could trade. For the life of me I don't know why you think everything is a "fight" or someone is trying to "fight" with you when we are simply discussing the team. Get real dude. We're talking about a basketball team. Don't think you are so important that I go around "fighting" you. I didn't even pay attention to who the original poster was. I simply responded to the content. You are a knowledgeable poster and you make decent contributions here from time to time but for you to think that I am targeting you and "fighting" you is absurd. You think way too highly of yourself. Get over yourself already. Go back and look at your post history. You will find instances when I agreed with you and expressed it. Geez Louise dude. What you should have said was, "Oh, my bad, I counted the Nets pick twice and assumed another pick that was just a pick swap. Thanks for catching that." And then go on with whatever you want to say. That garners a whole lot more respect from the rest of us than you constantly challenging other posters that make legit points to counter WHATEVER idea you are promoting.

Oh.....and I did not say Boston did not have the assets to trade for Love. In fact, quite the contrary. If you will look back at when Boston made the Pierce/Garnett deal with Brooklyn you will find that I said at that time that Boston probably moved to the head of the line in regards to having the most assets to trade for Love. Believe me, you are not so important that I think I have to "fight" with you. Dude, I didn't even realize it was you posting. If I had I might've just rolled my eyes and let you go on believing whatever you want to about Boston having 10 picks. Because I really don't care what you personally think. I was simply pointing out for the board's benefit how many picks Boston can actually trade and the potential pick range of those picks.

------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------

Enough with that stupidness.

------------------------------------------------------------

Now............. as to another point on picks..............

Does anybody here really think Minny simply wants the biggest pile of picks for Love that they can find when they trade him? Does anybody think that Minny is going to decide on who they trade Love to based on who offers them the most picks????

Let's be realistic. There's only 15 roster spots. You can't build a winner by having 15 guys on rookie deals with another 10 draft picks stashed to pick another 10 guys to replace 10 guys you are losing on rookie deals.

Carl Herrera has kept pounding this board about trading Harden for Love. Now while I do not believe that is a possibility, I do think that the best package of assets that will tempt Minny the most is a package that includes 3 things:

1. Several decent draft picks with some potential to possibly evolve into a lottery pick or two.

2. Good established talent and possibly a star player or two signed to a longer term deal. (Minny is not an attractive free agent destination. They've got the Utah syndrome. Players just don't want to go there for the most part. So for them to acquire top tier established talent they've most likely got to trade for it. And Rubio is quickly approaching free agency. They've got to do what they can to retain him. That means putting good defense and shooters around him. They need premier 3&D guys around Rubio and Pek.

3. Some form of cap relief to try to entice Pau Gasol to come play with Rubio this season would be ideal. While not a free agent destination, if they have Rubio (and possibly another Spaniard....Llull), then possibly Pau might come for a Tim Duncan style 3/30 deal. Additionally they would have enough cap space if they moved out Martin's deal, to go after Marc Gasol next off season. Now this is a very specific form of free agent recruiting. They know Love wants to leave. They know Lebron and Melo and LaMarcus and Dirk and Bosh and Wade ain't coming. They know they may have a shot at the Gasol brothers simply because Rubio is there. If they don't do this there is the distinct possibility of all 3 Spaniards re-uniting in San Antonio (or possibly Memphis or some other city) a couple years from now.

-------------------

Now of the 3 things I listed above...I think #1 and #2 are definites for Minnesota. I just don't see them piling themselves in the corner with a gazillion draft picks but no real talent on the floor to win games with Rubio over the next couple seasons. If they do that....they might as well trade Rubio now before his trade value goes down as he moves towards free agency. And #3 on my list is a maybe. "Some form of cap relief" means having the ability to add a player like Gasol for about $10 million per season.

So Carl Herrera is making a legit point about Harden for Love. It won't happen but you've got to consider what PLAYERS can be traded to Minnesota along with the draft picks. The ideal scenario for Minnesota is a Love trade is a trade that leaves them:

1. Playoff competitive by having a decent team around Rubio.
2. Below the cap enough to possibly sign a decent free agent
3. Players on good value contracts that they can continue to make trades with.

7 picks and another couple youngsters.....while an attractive package.... doesn't do all that. And Gerald Wallace doesn't do that. Rubio needs shooters. Big time shooters. And lots of them for Minnesota to have a chance to make the playoffs. And he needs defenders, big time defenders for Minnesota to have a chance to make the playoffs.

Think:
Arron Afflalo
Ryan Anderson
Ersan Ilyasova
Paul Millsap
Lance Stephenson
Patrick Patterson
CJ Miles
Shawn Marion
Thabo Sefalosha

etc.

Unpopular Opinion

I hate to be a downer but......

Kevin Love is fools gold, the rockets need to focus on developing a defensive identity, you dont win championships with gimick basketball. Kevin Love plays no defense, and Dwight doesnt erase all mistakes like he did in orlando. I think if rondo is still available, that is a better direction to move in. Also offensively i have no interest in watching 3's being shot from 4 positions all season long which is why I dont watch the euroleague.

It takes more that throwing a bunch of fancy names on a team and expecting everything to magically work out.

This makes no sense at all. If you want to focus on defense, why pursue Rondo? Do you think Beverley is an inadequate defender?

Acquiring a stretch 4 would give Dwight more space in the post which would lead to better shots for everyone. As long as they're good shots, you shouldn't care how many 3's we shoot.

"Report: T'wolves quietly preparing to trade Kevin Love. yahoo.com."

Hope that the trade is going to be done soon, so the rockets can move on for the next plan.

Yep, will no doubt happen before the draft and probably to the Celtics. Never thought he was coming here anyway.

I am not sure that the Wolves are going to want to take a salary back as large as Green, unless the player has value on the trade market... and I don't think Green does.

Love has veto to the extent that he can refuse to sign an extension, which will most likely drive offers down from teams that he will not verbally commit to.

I agree with you, Morey is not going to wait on Love. If Anthony or Irving (yuck) become available and he can get one of them, I think he does.

There really is no telling what Love is going to do, what the Wolves will do and what the Wolves will value in trade. I am not so sure the Wolves want to rebuild again.

I find it hard to believe Morey is interested in Kyrie Irving unless he can get him super cheap or flip him elsewhere for a better pile of assets.

RONDO 5-2-14 - "I trust a lot in Danny," said Rondo. "He’s turned this thing around before. I have faith in him. I believe in Danny. I think we do need another big-time player. But that’s all his job. He’s working on that now and I completely have faith in him."

Nothing new to see here, I said it along time ago he will go to celtics Danny will make it happen with those picks and if not LOVE will pick warriors because of curry, fan base and in live CALI. He doesn’t want to come to Houston play a bosh role (smaller fan base also) that actually attends games . He also knows harden and howard already want their touches as it is. Danny traded Peirce, terry, KG got all the picks in an attempt to rebuild soon. The whole city wants to keep rondo and he wants to stay, but he understands the team needs another talented player and trust danny to get it done. This is where K.Love comes into play. I think it’s good for the NBA (east) as a fan of the nba in general, love goes to boston & melo goes to bulls, will be more competition in east bulls, nets, heat, Celtics similar to warriors, okc, rockets, spurs, clippers.

The Celtics are an enviable franchise run the right way. Great GM who understands the way a roster should be built/rebuilt and a "star" player who actually trusts his GM to make the team around him competitive. They are going to be back to being a force in a year or two.

Naw I wasn't saying beverley isnt a good defender, when I mentioned rondo it was in the sense that if we need a third star it should be rondo to run the show instead of another 3 point shooter.

Well they are going to have to take back something decent sized to make salaries match. Green only has 2 years left on his deal so I think people saying he's a bad contract are still carrying that notion from a year ago when it was bad value for the Rockets & would have been hard for the Rockets to take back and still make more moves.

Maybe they do end up trading expiring's of Bass/Anthony & young talent (Sully/Olynyk etc.) + picks, but IMO if I'm Minnesota Id rather take the extra year of Green's contract to get a useful player honestly. You still have half-way decent players on your team with Pek/K. Mart/Rubio/Brewer on long term contracts & some decent youth as well coming in. Might as well get a player that has some usefulness & can be traded for more than just an expiring contract.

Again that's just what I would prefer if I was Flip in his position. If he wants to gut the team again and start all over I would then say a Bass/Anthony & assets deal is a better way to go, but from every indication I get(and what you noted as well), that's not the route they will probably look to go(full tank job rebuild).

You couldn't answer a simple question without diverting into a side argument just to not be wrong.

The whole point of the conversation was that you said (more or less) that the Celtics didn't have enough assets (picks + whatever) to trade for Love and get rid of the Gerald Wallace contract. You couldn't live up to that statement obviously & had to divert.

You ended up turning that simple statement that you couldn't answer straight up into a conversation about how Minnesota needs a defender like Afflalo, cap space for Gasol, & how Morey might trump an offer by trading Harden which wont happen.

(side note: you yourself are adamant that the Rockets wont trade Parsons at any cost, but at the same time will entertain making a case for trading Harden???.... Dude come on)

And you wonder why you frustrate the hell out of people on here.
