Why are people acting like the Rockets are trading Capela for a player on the Celtics? Isn't the whole idea centered around obtaining draft compensation to flip in a trade for a SF? The players Boston sends will most likely be used mostly for salary matching purposes and maybe a useful player can be picked up like Daniel Theis. But the main focus of a trade with Boston would be the draft pick that would then be used to flip to a team like Minnesota for a player like Robert Covington. So the real trade would be Clint Capela for Robert Covington and Daniel Theis, for example.
Capela for Covington and Theis with the Celtics sending draft compensation to Minnesota...wouldn't be a bad trade to me. I certainly don't love the idea of having to count on Theis to anchor the front court, but we desperately need wing defense and a solid big to replace Capela. Just getting Covington, or any individual player, back for Capela is a lateral move.
Value, not contract. Tho watching TF swallow GH's contract would make great, if gross, vid... (just sayin')
Getting Smart and pick would be a good return, Smart is important for the Celtics but they also have plenty of guards there, Smart is under contract for just two more season and i don't know if they'll be able to resign him by that time. But oh god if we take back Kanter/Theis, pick and Langford...that would be a disaster. Hopefully Morey isn't forced into making a bad deal.
Covington Trade Idea (From Dunc'd On Mock Trade Deadline). It was a four way trade that involved Houston, Boston, OKC, and Minnesota: Houston Gets: Covington, Theis (from Boston) OKC Gets: Nene (from Houston), Porirer (from Boston) Boston Gets: Clint Capela (from Houston) Minnesota Gets: Andre Roberson (from OKC), Houston's 2020 first round pick, Milwaukee's 2020 first round pick (from Boston) Seems likely to happen.
Because trading 2 first picks for Covington is idiotic and no one else is willing to do it. I guarantee you that.
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=v2xawkf Based on what's out there and.. an ideal scenario for us. Pick from us and Boston go to Minnesota. And mayyyyyybe maybe. Wizards value Langford who they'll have past this season. Bertans would be a rental but eh.
Theis and Covington alone aren't worth Capella and a 1st round pick. Fingers crossed something more comes back in these scenarios.
We don't know what picks are being traded. The Rockets might be searching for a first round pick better than their own to flip.
If we deal Capela for Covington, I'd like to think that we would be the ones getting a pick. (And then hopefully moving that pick for a Crowder/Morris/Bertans type...)
If (when?) a Capela/Boston deal doesn't happen I look forward to the Boston fan narrative being that they are relieved because they weren't about to give up those primo assets for a legit starting center who can give Embiid fits.
