The reason to get Smith now is because it is swinging for the fences this season.

Instead of just trying to make the playoffs, the Rockets are in a position to beat anybody!

Considering Houston is, as I can confirm, engaged with Atl re: Josh Smith, pretty good indication Hawks not in love w/ deals elsewhere.

Smith isn't even worth ONE of those two, considering we can get him for just $$ in the offseason if we want.

I would make any package for Smith extremely minimal to be honest. We have all the leverage here and no need to part with anything but a rookie or a two.

at this point ...other than the fact that we don't have much experience at the 4, why not pass on Smith? We're still in excellent position to make the playoffs. Robinson and D-Mo are not scrubs. our assets will still be desirable to teams come summer. Maybe a true Allstar is made available though trade. why not just stand pat? Smith will test the market this summer anyway and we've got the cap space to get him that way too.

Don't trade for Josh Smith! Let's wait it out and pitch him and Dwight the idea of taking a pay cut to form a super team in Houston!

I'm actually kind of excited to see how T.Rob fares with us so I don't think I want to see a trade go down.

You are right, and the real reason we pick someone up like him is to PAIR him with Asik, to take the bigger guys off him and create a mismatch.

For Josh Smith, giving up Thomas Robinson is worth it.

If it was a Thomas Robinson + filler for Josh Smith, you do that trade all day any day.

I don't buy it... not quite. I think we'd be just below championship contender status with Smith. We might make it out of the 1st round but I doubt we do much past that.

Maybe with Smith + continued development of our young guys, in future years we could contend for a title. But not this year. Not enough experience on this squad.

wooohoo!!! I can feel Morey is looking to pry on Smith on the cheap.

Its gonna be something along the lines of Thomas Robinson for Josh Smith.

The more and more you are starting to realize it? It's been pretty obvious from day one which is exactly why Atlanta is going to get between little-and-nothing for the guy. Humpheries/Brooks/pick from Jersey is my guess. No, Houston isn't giving up two starters for Josh smith. If he were locked in to a friendly deal for 2.5 more years? It would be a big consideration. But not as it is.

I understand some folks don't like Smith for....whatever reason. He is an undisciplined shooter that has taken way too many long twos in the last season and a half. But he is a phenomenal help defender (which is a big deal when Harden and Lin are responsible for guarding the backcourt), a skilled passer, and excellent in transition. He can finish at the rim on PnR and in traffic. For this team, the ONLY thing not to like is his recent shot selection, which may have been born of necessity in Atlanta rather than hubris.

For those worried about his max deal: so what? The only other FA this summer worth a max deal is Howard. Would you like to save the money to give to Iggy in 2014? Lebron isn't coming here. Carmelo isn't coming here. Kobe isn't coming here. The only risk to signing smith to a max deal is the possibility that Parsons gets sniped by someone else at some point. I think that's a problem worth worrying about in 2-3 years instead of tomorrow. We spent years talking about how having assets was getting us nowhere until *boom* the Harden trade. Now, cap space is the most valuable thing we have...let's not spend the next 3 years sitting on it wondering if someone incrementally better or slightly more affordable than Josh Smith is on the way. 16ppg, 9rpg, 4apg, 2bpg and stellar defense? Check please, sign me up.

I'm hopeful we don't trade for him today for any price greater than, say, Jones or Robinson and the two 2's we picked up yesterday but only because I think signing him outright is realistic. But anyone saying they don't want Smith on this team in the future is not evaluating it clearly IMO.

The Hawks have no leverage. They don't want to sign him for the max and some GM out there is going to do something stupid like that.

Smith will be traded to the highest bidder today which IMO won't be that much.

True. But this way he can share minutes with TJones, DMo, even Asik if we want to go big or Parsons if we play small. Plus, you can't expect to pay both Smith and Howard in free agency.

I would much much much rather stay put right now, and make a play for Howard in free agency. Houston must be looking pretty good right now. If Howard is a no go there, then you can make a play for Smith in free agency.

Again, I would absolutely HATE for the Rockets to go for Smith right now if it includes Asik, Parsons or TRob.

It would practically be, Patrick Patterson, Cole Aldrich, Toney Douglas for Josh Smith. Who is their right minds wouldn't do that??!

we're talking about one of the best defensive players in the league, here. Some of y'all actin' like he is an over paid scrub or something lol
