I think the comparison between wrestling and wnba is a good one

    both are garbage

not one player can average 20 ppg? is the basket smaller?

but the firefighter comparison is awful, the wnba should not bother but those who watch it

No one is forcing us to watch the WNBA. I choose to watch it now and then because I like Houston teams, and the game of basketball in general. If the league survives, I imagine that the players will improve over time. There aren't enough women playing sports to produce quality players.

Probably .0005 percent of all boys who play basketball in school turn out to be superstar NBA players. Far fewer girls play basketball, so star-potential players result. If more girls were to play in earlier levels, they would eventually produce a better pool of professionals.

I'm hoping that all the girls who are now getting exposed to the women's professional game will be inspired to learn the game early, and work on it throughout school and college. If that is the case, then in a decade or so the league will be a far better product.

It is going to take time.

I think it's a good thing that women have their own sports leagues. As long as they don't play American Football, that is.

And I have always enjoyed women's tennis.

Right now, the WNBA just needs to focus on firing their entire advertising department...

I'll watch the WNBA from time to time - like all sports, it's interesting if you care about the teams and the players involved. If you don't care about the outcome, any sport is kind of boring.

I don't agree with ZRB's argument about untapped female potential though. I believe that most athletic girls end up playing one sport or another in high school. They may not play the sport they are most suited to, but that is a different kind of efficiency and is unlikely to change for a long time.

Better coaching at all levels may eventually raise the level of play though. Another thing likely to raise the level of play at lower levels is WNBA exposure. If more girls watch the game, more girls will have high basketball IQ.

I know there is probably nothing that will change your mind, or people like you, but anyone who thinks the players in the WNBA suck athlethically just because they don't play above the rim are displaying their own ignorance. For the record (and I could pull quotes from reporters who cover the Comets, but I won't waste the time), the Comets regularly scrimmage against members of the Rockets staff and ex-college players, no quarter given, and the games are competitive. A high school team wouldn't stand a chance.

Another of many examples I could give of the talent level of the WNBA players, as reported by the Seattle Times earlier this season:

"Dunn (the Seattle coach) lightened up a fiery practice by offering $20 to anyone who made a halfcourt shot within five minutes. Both guard Semeka Randall and forward Takeisha Lewis made the shot. Lewis needed one attempt while Randall needed three." Of course, I am sure members of the average high school team could do better.

Finally, the Comets drew their one millionth fan last week. Not bad for a team that can't draw fans. And their fans pay for their own tickets, not like most Rockets fans. Been to a Rockets game lately?

I don't get the WNBA haters. Insecure perhaps?

i'm certainly not a hater. i like and root for the comets and will watch games from time to time and watch pretty much all their playoff games. but i'm not gonna say the basketball is even close to on par with men or pretend it's beautiful to watch. the shooting is not that spectacular (even open shots) despite a smaller ball, post players can't elevate before shooting, ball-handling is lacking, and many other things are not that aesthetically pleasing about wnba games. one of the few wnba players i really respect talent wise is swoopes cuz she's actually damn good. she can shoot, is lightning fast, and can dribble fairly well. i'm sure if i was guarding her on the perimeter she would lay it in before i could turn around. but she's a diamond in the rough. sometimes i watch other players and think i could be out there doing a decent job.

Uh, aren't you the world's biggest Anna Kournikova fan? The majority of WNBA players are better athletes than she is yet they won't get the same "respect" from people like you because they don't look like p*rn stars.

Players have averaged 20ppg for a season in the WNBA, try again.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 16 is still over half of 29 right?

Although I have come to loathe the WNBA (why should they get all those endorsements, attention, $$$$, exposure when they play worse than ME?! Bastards.), I cant agree with this article. Its just too full of hate and insults. Plus the author doesn't know sh*t about pro basketball.

    hey, i said "think":)

seriously though, me in a matt bullard type role, drifting around the moved in 3 point line waiting for open shots (i can shoot), getting hopelessly burned on defense ( i know i could pull this off), i can picture it man.

I also think the WNBA is a joke. It is a league that is totally supported by the NBA and is forced onto our TV sets by the NBA and NBC.
So I don't like the WNBA, but at the same time I realize we live in a world where money talks, so apparently the NBA has some reason for supporting this league. Maybe it's the fan base, maybe it's a tax writeoff, but whatever the reason they support it.

Unfortunately, I think an "Anna Kournikova" type player in the WNBA is the only thing that would significantly increase the overall interest, and I don't see that happening in the near future. I mean, look what it's done for woman's tennis. I don't know, maybe even more young girls would show interest if some of the players looked more "girlie-girl"...maybe not. After all, young girls becoming WNBA fans is the most important thing, and it's the main reason why I think the league should definitely continue. I just can't see a large part of girls getting into it when many of the players honestly look and act somewhat like men.
If I had a daughter, I would be much happier if she was a WNBA fan than one of those boy-band worshippers I see on MTV.

oh jeeze Kam, Noone is shoving it down your throat...You have a remote control for that TV of yours...use it.

I have no problem with a woman's league, they aren't playing against the NBA and they don't put the WNBA games on at the same time as NBA...so you won't accidently see it while waiting for Rox games to start.

I look at it this way, I don't like wrestling..but am I coming out here and screaming from the rooftops about how bad it sucks and why don't they take it off the air...If you want to watch overgrown monsters act stupid and fake injuries and violence against each other in the name of entertainment...that's your business.

Same deal with the WNBA, you may think it's stupid and not worthy of watching...but from what i have seen in the Laptop at Comets games, there is obviously alot of girls who enjoy watching it..Why would you want to deny them the chance to see women that they can look up to?

I may be in the minority among men, but I personally am not threatened by women playing basketball.

yeah a few players averaged 20ppg a few years ago

only one player has an average over 18 ppg this season, and she shoots a blistering 42% from the field

lack of athleticism puts them all on the same playing field
I dunno, to me that makes the whole league sorry

With respect to the 20 ppg comment. The author again, neglects to mention that the men play 48 minutes while the women play 40. An 18 PPG avg in 40 mintues equates to 22 in 48 minutes.

Incidentally, the Big Ten must not be very worthwhile to watch. There was not a single player that averaged even 18 PPG last season.

I'm sorry, but the quality of play in the WNBA sucks. This being said, I was a huge fan of my girls basketball team the past 4 years when I was in high school. They went to the state finals this past year and I honestly think they play a better quality and more entertaining than anything i've seen in the WNBA. The passing absolutely sucks in the WNBA, its like throw the ball down the court and see who can scramble to get it first.

I can tolerate women's college basketball and high school, but the WNBA is crap.
