I'm sort of having that same feeling right now. The main difference this year as compare to last year is we have a player in T-Mac that not only can penetrate down the lane, make off-balance 3 pointers in critical stretches, and makes spectacular passes, but he definitely makes his teammates a lot better out on the court as well. He makes the game fun for everybody and its caused two or three players (Barry, James, Sura whoever) to create shots and keep the offense flowing when he takes a breather. We certainly have the killer instinct and we showed our resillence to the adversity when Dallas make their run in the fourth quarter. Last year's team would've lost on Saturday. This is easily the best team assembled since the 1997 season. You could also bring up a case that we're a version of the 2000 T-Wolves when they started 7-13 and ended up with 50 wins. We started out 6-11 and ended up with 51 wins.

I feel like this is like 1995 in the sense that we came out and won this game convincingly against a former midwest team (Dallas who is like us now in the soutern divison). Then we would possibly play Phoenix in the second round if or when we advance. Then San Antonio in the conference finals when we'd be talking about how to defend Duncan instead of Robinson. Eventually if we make it to the finals, we'd probably play Shaq which would be from a Florida team again. Amazing that this has the looks for a repeat of 95', but lets take care of tonight.

    I hear ya!

Chris, I think the attitude of this team is *one game at a time.* Which means, that they go out and win each game; and they are never satisfied. Not to just be satified with winning the 1st game in Dallas. They know most people/fans think that the 1st game win is enough. They don't. They want the 2nd game too!

They want to shock the NBA world! Keep an eye on the Rox defense this game. They know the Mavs will come out swinging. So, will we.

So, I think the results of what this team believes will lay the ground work for your "Witness something special."

    ;)

I think the tone of this thread is not overcondience. It's more about a hunch. A feeling that ChrisP has. As do I.

And it's not a prediction that we wont lose games. It's more about, that even through adversity, we will never give up. And through great chemistry, we wont let each other give up.

    The true meaning of team.

can't wait for the negative posts after the game#2 loss... how quickly people change their tune.... Spurs lost the first game....don't expect them to lose the series though... same goes for Dallas...an off night is always welcome earlier than later.

I will be very glad if we can advance to 2nd round. To win a title is just too much for our Big-Mac, who are still too young to peak. That being side, I won't mind at all if the Rockets can win it all. ;)

We will win because God hates the Dallas Mavericks. He just told me. And he also said that the Rockets are due for another championship. It was God, take it as you want...

    I BELIEVE.

We can do some damage in these playoffs. Win or lose tonight - we can come back and gut it out the rest of the way. Don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion (....er, the heart of a franchise who has won a championship).

My take on this is similar but slightly more guarded. I recognize the comparisons with that 1995 team. I also get much the same feeling as the 1986 team with a couple of young superstars-in-the-making (Hakeem and Ralph -- one who got there and one who didn't) coming together with a good supporting cast to realize that they can beat ANYBODY if they just play their game and do it well. It is so exciting to see a team which has just realized that, and can't wait to go out and prove it to the world.

But I think an important thing to remember about 1995 is how hard each series was until the finals. It was a BRUTAL uphill climb until
    the finals.

This team has the talent, the heart, and the chemistry to go all the way given such a brutal Western Conference schedule. But that doesn't mean that they will. The margin for error is so small at this level. Two or three plays can be the difference in a game, in a series. What I like is that Van Gundy has them realizing that and has them playing like they believe it. Ironically, it is that very one-game-at-a-time, one-opponent-at-a-time focus which gives them the chance to go all the way and be that special.

The other thing I really like is that Sura & Barry have them realizing what a special opportunity it is, and how important it is to go for it NOW -- not next year or the year after. Everybody assumed that 1986 was just the beginning of something special, but.... You never know if you'll get another chance this good, and I really like the fact that these guys realize it.

I have to agree with the Richard Justice's pre-playoff article, though. This team has already accomplished something special, regardless what happens in the playoffs. 1995? That was very, very special. This team has the potential for a 1986 or a 1995, but that is SOOOO hard and unlikely. I believe they can, but it's too soon for me to believe completely that they will. I am extremely excited about the opportunity to watch them try, though!!!

As for T-Mac, I am ready to annoint him as the second best Rocket ever. And given how I feel about Mo and the 1980 team, that's not easy for me to do. We've never had a non-center who can do EVERYTHING as well and as smoothly as this guy. I knew it was a good move when we traded for him; I knew he was superstar-caliber scorer. But I didn't realize what a great all-around player he could be. He really is a true franchise-level player, no matter how ironic it might be to call him that right now.

Yes, it's true. We could lose tonights game. But that's not the point of this thread. Heck, we had negative posts after game 1. That wont change.

On Saturday, I too began to have this "feeling". The last time I saw a Rockets' TEAM play with this level of heart, determination and passion, it was 1995 - the year Rudy T made his famous declaration: "Never underestimate the heart of a champion!".

Man, these guys continue to amaze! Game 2 showed their grit and determination yet again.

Nice post GocartMozart. I like your comparison to the ‘86 team too. We all thought that was just the start of something amazing, but that proved how fleeting these opportunities are. I really think these guys see that and won’t be satisfied unless they go all the way. McGrady and Yao might not as much, because they’ve still got many years ahead of them, but there’s plenty of hungry veterans around to make sure they understand.

But, you’re right that it’s a brutal, uphill climb. That’s what makes it so special. We can’t know if it will or won’t happen, but it can happen. I think it can especially this year, right now. These guys have a special opportunity in their hands and Van Gundy will not let them lose their focus.
