why on earth would we want mike james. First of all I think he wanted to start. He isn't worth it. Bibby is someone i would love to have as a starting point guard. I just don't think it is possible. Francis would be nice to have back and I hope he has learned to let Tmac and Yao be the stars. Sam Cassell even at this age is worth the money. Mike james is just a no. With his ego up his own buttocks he won't be happy being the pg coming off our bench that we had 2 seasons ago.

The numbers work, just mail the Rockets the trophy and save the pain! Imagine a first rate PG on this team. It is really a shame that the organization has not done better at getting a sharp shooting guard on this team. JVG says we have enough. He is wrong.

Umm...we are wanting a back-up PG that will ultimately split time with Rafer, not replace him. Lue would be ideal....if he can stay healthy.

    Deal or no deal?
    By Ira Winderman - SportingNews

If nothing else, the All-Star break allows teams the opportunity to pause and take stock of where they are headed.

And then, three days later, those teams determine where their players are headed. Such is the somewhat incongruous timing of the February 22 trading deadline. Though much of the deadline preamble tends to be bluster, this season's trade winds could wind up uprooting more than the typical number of difference-makers.

    Big tickets

Even without another major move, the blockbuster quota has been met this season, with Allen Iverson going to the Nuggets and Al Harrington and Stephen Jackson the headliners of a bunch that was shipped to Golden State for a package that included Troy Murphy and Mike Dunleavy.

By the deadline, though, there could be deals with even more of a wow factor.

Although Pau Gasol's request to be traded from the Grizzlies has drawn more smoke than fire so far, the bottom line is Memphis is in the midst of a major transition. Gasol's departure possibly will precede exits by owner Michael Heisley and team president Jerry West. The Bulls seem like the best bet to make a bid for Gasol because they have more top-tier young talent than the needy Celtics. Portland was an option before it rethought the advantages of retaining the rookie contracts of LaMarcus Aldridge and Sergio Rodriguez.

Then there are the Kings, who have struggled to win games with the talented but disjointed nucleus of Ron Artest, Mike Bibby and Kevin Martin. Bibby can opt out of his contract after this season, and Artest's shelf life in Sacramento may have already reached its expiration date (at least where the local chapter of the Humane Society is concerned).

Like Bibby, Nets guard Vince Carter can opt out at season's end, and like Bibby, he is toiling for a team whose postseason potential is dwindling. Of course, like Bibby, Carter would have to leave a bundle of cash on the table that he might not be able to recoup elsewhere.

Several big-name forwards also are in position to at least threaten to opt out in the next couple of years. Rashard Lewis could ask for a change, and the Sonics definitely need one. Andrei Kirilenko has been unhappy in Utah. Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal and Minnesota's Kevin Garnett figure to ride out the season before pushing for a franchise-changing move.

    Follow-up moves

Because of the early player movement, there already are discussions of follow-up trades. Adding Jackson to their perimeter rotation left the Warriors overloaded at the swing positions. And since the Pistons signed Chris Webber, there hardly has been a need for Nazr Mohammed, Dale Davis or Jason Maxiell in the power rotation. Mohammed and Davis initially pushed for a move but since have backed off.

Two other follow-ups apparently have been put on hold. The 76ers, who have been reinvigorated since point guard Andre Miller arrived, aren't likely to alter the team's budding chemistry. And the Pacers continue to insist they will not trade Dunleavy to the Clippers for Corey Maggette.

If Carter is dealt, it is possible the Nets also will dispatch Jason Kidd as part of a follow-up youth movement.

    Second thoughts

The Clippers appear ready to unload Maggette after saying just a few weeks ago that wouldn't happen. Few mixes appear as toxic as Maggette and coach Mike Dunleavy.

The Trail Blazers are more than willing to dump center Jamaal Magloire, who was acquired in the offseason and has been pushing for a trade for weeks. Similarly, Detroit seems to have developed a disconnect with guard Flip Murray, and even the Cavaliers' relationship with Larry Hughes could be reconsidered. Both players were acquired just last season.

In New York, once-untouchable power forward Channing Frye might shake loose as part of a salary cap dump by the Knicks. Isiah Thomas has made a deadline move each year since joining the team.

    Timing issues

As always, players with dwindling minutes tend to make their feelings known around the deadline. A lack of playing time has Blazers guard Juan Dixon wondering whether he wouldn't be better off elsewhere and power forward Melvin Ely eager to see whether there is more to life than the end of Charlotte's bench.

Even the agent for Kings point guard Jason Hart has lashed out about his client's need for playing time, which, if nothing else, was a reminder to all that Jason Hart still is in the league. Raptors swingman Morris Peterson also could ask for a trade, given that Toronto is displaying a preference for its newer additions over its franchise mainstay.

    Small stuff

Among the point guards who could attract interest from playoff contenders are the Bobcats' Brevin Knight, who is superfluous because of the presence of Raymond Felton and Jeff McInnis; the Magic's Carlos Arroyo and Travis Diener, who have been caught in a rotation loaded with ballhandlers but thin on go-to scorers; and the Mavericks' Anthony Johnson, who is no better than third at the position in Dallas.

    Buyouts

The final component of the trading deadline is the buyout factor. Webber and Eddie Jones already have paid (or been paid) for their freedom, and Knicks guard Steve Francis is possibly next. Magloire also has been linked to an eventual buyout.

Possible dumping of a 4 by NY before the deadline and still stalk of a SF buyout. How about we trade Sura and Bonzi and 1st round pick to NY from either Frye or Lee. Then sign SF3 to the minimum when they buy him out. He is currently shooting 91 percent from the free throw lines and is averaging about 5 fts a game in limited action. Someone mentioned we need a penetrator that could nail free throws to take pressure of Tmac...looks like we have candidate here for cheap.

    Lee Howard Hayes
    Battier Snyder
    Tmac Head
    Alston Francis

I'm all for a Steve Francis signing if New York buys him out, but the trade you suggested doesn't make sense for New York. Bonzi is as good as gone next year. Plus, if they cut SF, they alleviate a lot of their salary cap woes already, so their need for Sura is minor. Why would they give up David Lee (who just one MVP of the sophmore/rookie game...I'm not suggesting that's a huge accomplishment) for an expiring contract and a player who is gone next year? Its not like New York expects to go far in the playoffs this year...or even make the playoffs, so Bonzi doesn't help them. I know they're in luxury tax land, but there's no way they'll just start giving assets away for nothing in return.

i agree with david, but fry hasnt' been playing alot. needless to say, i think isaiah is serious about going to the playoffs because hes fired if he doesn't. bonzi would just be the extra boost. last week i checked and they were like 3 games behind the 8 spot.

No deal. Mike James is not a "difference-maker" and trading Luther Head for him is too high a price. I'd take a chance on Steve Francis (if healthy) before I traded for Mike James. At least Francis was a perennial All Star before being exiled to New York.

    Tonight:

Delonte West -- I checked in on this box score late in the third quarter and he was 8-10 shooting, 5-5 from long range, 21 points, 5 assists...

Mike James -- 20 points in 21 minutes.

Luke Ridnour -- I don't really see him as attainable, but he's got 12 assists and 4 steals in 23-24 minutes thus far.

Why did we give Sura so much money ? Man what were we thinking...I know he flys all over the place and jumps into crowds and all over the floor but we paid him way too much...I Love Sura but he still has 2 yrs on his contract ? Please retire Sura and stop being a Bagwell...Look at Bags now he accepted it and he is now part of the Astros organization and we don't have to pay him crumbs now.... :D

On TNT David Aldridge just said that the deal the Wolves had set up with Detroit, which was Mike James for Nazr Mohammed, just went cold. He now believes that Minnesota is exploring three-way trade options to get rid of James.

Woah! I certainly do not watch any Celtic's games but is Delonte on the block and actually attainable?

The 3 way trade is supposed to involve Bibby going to the Cavs and James going to the Kings to be their new PG. Not sure what the Wolves get out of it. I think Bucher was reporting these were the talks.

Marc Stein is reporting the Wolves want to move James by the deadline. He is definitely available!

Clutch, I watched the Wolves game. James looked good coming off the bench as an energizer. I think that's his best role. He looked much more comfortable doing that then just 'setting up teammates' to start the game.

What stood out to me was his dribble penetration and getting to the FT line. He was 10-12. He isn't afraid to draw the contact....a STARK contrast to another PG we know.

I dont think West will be moved. I think they would Telfair before West. His play is really starting to come on. And the Celtics value their young assets much higher than other team GMs do.

Ridnour is obtainable, but I dont think we have the pieces to get it done. Supposedly Atlanta is after him, but is offering crap.
