This idiotic thread reminds me of when we drafted Canaan and people said we should trade Lin because we already had our PG lineup set.

Absolutely, I think those two guys will make Lin expendable some time in the middle of next season. Not because any of them is a better overall player than Lin, but because having two players on minimum contracts capable of playing behind Beverley and Harden gives us the luxury of moving Lin for other pieces we may need.

Once teams realize we have the money to sign anyone in 2015, and if that players tell the organization they will sign with us in the summer, Lin and Asik's contracts become huge assets. They are both highly capable rotation players whose combined salaries nearly match a MAX salary.

For example, if Kevin Love tells the Wolves he wants to join the Rockets (which is highly unlikely, but just for example's sake) then the Wolves have a decision to make. They can (A) let him play disgruntled and then walk for nothing, or (B) they can take two expiring contracts who can play rotation minutes for them plus a young player. Both scenarios cost the same, but in scenario B they start their rebuilding process peacefully and at a slight advantage.

This strategy is precisely why I believe the Rockets will place tremendous effort into developing Canaan and Daniels - in order to avoid holes in the rotation if/when big time trade opportunities arise and they have no choice but to use Lin and Asik's contracts to make it happen.

In addition, those guys fit our system very nicely since they can both shoot. They can punish teams if Howard is in the middle. Daniels looks like he can learn to play D, Canaan looks like he'll have to learn to be mediocre defensively and continue to refine his 3pt shot. Doesn't hurt to be learning from Patrick Beverley and have Dwight Howard to erase a few mistakes. Moreover, I can see certain rotations where Harden can offensively and defensively dominate SF's, which puts Daniels on the outside to nail 3's against teams who have to collapse on Howard, Harden and possibly a 3rd star.

TL;DR version: Morey is king. We are "capologically" ballin.

Lol. Don't take it so personal. It's just yet another stupid thread.

Canaan hasn't done anything to take any minutes from Lin. We might see some of Daniels, but I doubt it.

except the difference is, nobody is saying Canaan/Daniels should be starting and should be closing out games, or should be handed the keys to the offense

Premature thread...it'll sort itself out. These guys are still too raw to really consistently threaten Lin's minutes, now or early next season. Later next year Lin will be traded or will be gone by the summer.

They've got better raw tools and a feel for basketball. Will be good competition for our backup PG spot.. But I'll give it to whoever plays effective defense and doesn't turn the call over. No time to learn sets and build chemistry once the playoffs start.

I don't get what this has to do with anything. Just because Lin has some crazed fans he shouldn't be playing over Canaan and Daniels?

Lin is a better overall player than either at both ends of the floor at this point. And it's not really close either. Case closed - enjoy the playoffs.

They may enter into the calculations for the offseason if the team is looking to clear cap room for a big $ guy. But for now, there likely isn't much of an impact on Lin's minutes unless Lin really struggles or the team is in really desperate need for 3 point shooting above all else.

Canaan has had a few good games, but he's even more inconsistent than Lin and is a bigger defensive liability than Lin for the most part. Canaan is quick, but often gets confused on D and gets caught badly on every screen. The coaches seem to have reservations about relying on him at the moment judging by recent games. He's behind Lin and Beverley right now.

Daniels got some minutes, but he's been put more into the Garcis/Hamilton/Casspi backup wing spot. IIRC, in an earlier New Orleans game he actually played a good deal in a Lin-Beverley-Daniels-Harden-Howard lineup (Parsons missed the game).

In any case, Lin is gonna get dibs on the minutes before either of them. Like anyone on the team, though, it's up to him to help the team win enough to keep the minutes and maybe get more. The Rockets started Greg Smith in game 1 of the playoffs last year (and the final 10-11 games of the regular season), but after the team lost badly in game 1, the team went small the rest of the series. I'm sure the team is open to making adjustments like this.

As has been stated, better chance of that next year. Only happening in the playoffs if Lin is really struggling and we need 3 point shooting.

If you watch the games, you will notice that Daniels is not taller than Lin. He's more like 6'2 on a good day. Daniels is a great shooter though so I would not be surprised to see him get minutes in the playoffs. Lin will get a lot of minutes as a part of the rotation so expect to see Canaan only as insurance in blowout/injury situations.
