Much like a Red Sox-Yankees game, a Bush-Kerry election or a Manny-Moes internet catfight (I keed), this is a classic case of rooting for both these a-holes to lose. Here's to an long, drawn out, expensive fight resulting in public exposure & financial hardship for the scumbag cultists & prison sentences & fines for the scumbag hackers.

Im all for the hackers...good stuff.

Scientology sucks, much like Beltran. On a side note, I think its time I get over Beltran and change my sig.

I've no problem with folks following Scientology. The Church of Scientology International and their army of lawyers and private investigators is another matter. As for what those specific problems are, Operation Clambake has a better, well-documented (including court transcripts) rundown of offenses and convictions than I have the time or interest give.

While recognizing that today's major religions built their foundations using tactics worse than anything the CoS has done so far, I disapprove of any organization (religious, economic, political or whatever) abusing people, violating the principles of our country ( and other democratic nations), and perverting legal systems to quell dissent and criticism.

As for the crackers and scriptkiddies, they have been very entertaining. I doubt they will have much effect beyond raising awareness about CoS, its tactics and beliefs. But even that is a small victory in itself. It will be an even bigger victory if they manage to embolden the mainstream media to actually report on the organization's activities without fear of years of fivolous lawsuits (1, 2) or worse.

You know, once we finally bridge the gap between metal and flesh, when we have ascended into digital beings, having uploaded our consciousnesses on-line to live in eternity, we will remember this as the first great war of our new world.

Latest press release from Anonymous -- much better job of defining who they are and what their mission is.

Soooo...it's going down on the 10th of February!!! This is getting more and more hilarious with each new video.

I can see it now...just like an MXC episode...The Internets vs. The Scientologists.

Wow, this thing is really evolving... its not just geeks and skiddies. The Economist is now on the story:
It seems to really be getting organized. The Project Chanology Wiki even has a Long Term Planning page now. Seems a big part of the long-term strategy is to get lawmakers to take another look at exactly how Scientology got its tax-exempt/religious status. Folks in Anonymous are taking to evangelizing the advice of a number of Scientology critics, like Mark Bunker.

One advice video I found interesting:
    <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oyZD8zBesqs&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oyZD8zBesqs&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Its just interesting seeing this thing take off and get coverage in the mainstream media. We'll see how the 10th goes...

Indeed. Johnny Lee Miller, who also starred in another movie I really liked, Trainspotting. He also used to be married to Mrs. Pitt.

While I wish Anonymous well in their legal methods, I'm not convinced it's as large or 'successful' as it looks. The youtube videos only show a handful of people outside Scientology offices. The main website Anon used went down numerous times and is still not back up (their wiki thingy is back though). I'll believe it (or not) on the 10th.

Although mailing 'harmless' white powder to the Scientology offices yesterday was a pretty serious move.

I don't think the white powder was an Anonymous action...I'm pretty sure that the church is trying to do an 'operation freakout' again in which they received fake bomb threats that they generated or paid someone to make in order to seem like the victims.

    Read more:
    Operation Freakout

In any case, the 10th of February will be interesting indeed.

I definitely wouldn't put it past the church themselves, or a third party unrelated to the church or Anon to have done this. I meant to mention that the fact that this white powder thing occurred and gained national recognition wouldn't have happened w/ out this campaign in the first place, so there is in fact some kind of result coming out of it (for better or worse).

This is a classic CoS maneuver. I'm pretty sure there is nothing about mailing white powder in any of Anonymous' propaganda. CoS has done everything possible to try and counter anonymous, including flooding the master control chatrooms on 711chan with botnets (armies of illegally hacked computers used as drones) to try to disrupt the attacks. I'm not making this up -- I was there watching it happen. It took the ops by surprise and they were eventually forced to require users to register their nicks to rejoin. They've also taken to attempting to bury negative articles about them on Digg and other similar sites.

Unfortunately for them, CoS seems to be losing each battle, especially in the court of public opinion. Ultimately if Anon can sustain its efforts and get the public and government to investigate what these people are doing ... then they will have achieved their goals. I certainly would rather have congress investigating the shady methods they used to obtain tax-free status rather than attention-whoring over Spygate and other such matters of little consequence.

The people behind the attack, 4chan and 711chan are some of the lowest form of filth on the internet. They regularly discuss and traffic in the images of child p*rnography and pedophilia. If you don't believe look at their chat logs.

Furthermore, they are also amateur terrorists as well. Remember that Super Bowl Bomb hoax from a few years ago. It originated on 4chan.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4chan#NFL_bomb_threat_hoax

So I guess supporters of 4chan/711chan/anonymous are throwing their weight behind people who support pedophilia and attacks against the USA.

Its most likely the people with Anonymous have sent this white powder.

LOL. The spin machine is in full effect. Everybody knows that the *chans are the ghettos of the Internet. Except that now they are now mostly united in one cause, and have been joined by the Ebaumsworlds, Digg and other massive social networks. When was the last time you saw a revolution ignited from the middle class and surburbia?

Actually I guess the question I should be asking is, have you completed OT 7 yet, Mr. Brightside?

The channers are scum. They wouldn't even deny that. How could they? It is too easy to see who the Anons were on the chans or even in Encyclopedia Dramatica. However, even the original anons would also readily admit that the Anonymous of this project is bigger and a different entity than the anonymous of the chans.

Anonymous is an evolving concept. Thanks to the actions of the Church of Scientology International, they have evolved into an entity beyond the juvenile and dangerous folks that once made the anons. Hell, I'm interested in seeing how the original anons regain their identity after the lulz for this movement have ended.

Heck, I didn't even know about these groups until last week. Most of what one needs to know about them can be found on at encyclopediadramatica.org. The channers don't hide who they are. But note, that they are many different individuals, some are racists, some are pedophiles and some have assisted the FBI in catching pedophiles.

Anyway, the white powder incident could be any of the two parties or a third. Such an act is not below either the CoS OSA or channers.
