The goal for Windows 8 has been a 2012 release since as far back as 2009. Sinofsky does not miss deadlines. Microsoft pushed out Windows 8 images to their production environment this week. When Windows 7 was released, full RTM was released less than 7 months after that point. For Windows 8 there has been a developer preview, and a consumer preview... and a beta is slated for May-June.

Microsoft would not have released a developer preview (SEP 2011) more than a year out from an RTM release. It would leave the developers "hanging." Every major news agency that has reported on it, shows a 2012 holiday season release. My money is on August-September, just like with Windows 7.

Reading a bunch of stuff. I don't see the hoopla. Sure this will make getting a Windows based tablet worthwhile, as in true competition to the iPad, but that is about it.

The Metro design is too simplistic, and virtually any power using or true user personalization or what not will require using the basic desktop again. It almost feels like when dashboard was added to to Mac OS X, just a much more powerful version of dashboard.

i installed it today..installation was simple.

one thing that's bugging me is how you have to point the mouse to the top left corner to switch apps..but when the app thumbnail pops up and you naturally move your mouse over the thumbnail..it goes away!

even though the thumbnails pop up...you have to still click only the very corner.

how do you right click on a page in the IE app? right clicking just brings up the address back.

thankfully it's easy to go to the desktop and work from there.

This isn't accurate. Windows 98 had a major overhaul resulting in 98se, which should be counted as a separate system. The original 98 kind of fell into the ***** category. Also, I don't see Windows 2000 on there.

Not to mention, while Windows 95 had it's share of bugs and faults, it was LIGHTYEARS ahead of Windows 3.1 (or even 3.11).

Lest we forget, Windows 98 was so buggy, it bluescreened at the product launch:

And South Park had a thing or two to say about it, as well (language NSFW):

so I installed this last night on my second computer

after playing with it for about 20 minutes my conclusion is that this version is a pile of chit

it is garbage and needs to be put down...

I can't believe anyone would want this on their desktop

    Officially replaced windows 7.

Installed every single app with no issues for work.

    Office 2010
    Lync 2010
    Visual studio
    Installed all hardware drivers
    Etc

Dual screen is nice, metro on 1 side (love the live tiles), desktop on the other.

With SSD drive, boots up on 10 seconds

Love that I have a file system to transfer files.

Officially getting a windows 8 tablet. Not sure about a desktop but would consider this for a laptop or an Asus transformer type device.

I don't have a dual-screen setup, but would love to see yours as described. Maybe this is the year I decide to go dual-screen.

    This worked on developer preview

Open regedit by typing regedit at the Start screen.

    2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

    3. Modify the RPEnabled key to a “0” instead of the default “1”.

    4. To return to the Metro UI, just change the value back to a “1”.

There is also programs you can download to disable the metro (search it)

Microsoft already stated they will allow the Metro UI to be disabled via group policy. This will allow corporations to adopt this faster because so far I see this as Windows 7 with the following enhanced tools

Bit locker on the Drive (encryption)
Built-in in Antivirus-spyware-malware program (free)- Lol free...I bet antivirus companies are going to hate this.
Ability to interface with touch (if you choose)
Hyper-V on desktops (not in this version, but I believe in the final version we can see this)

In reality they do have a start button...it moved (to the right now vs left and you need to turn it on).

It ain't perfect but the more I use it, the more it feels like windows 7 with the ability to switch when I choose it.

If the vendors convert laptops into an Asus transformer type of device with really nice hardware design, I can see myself detaching the screen, use it as a tablet, walk back to my desk (or any desk that has a dock) and convert it to a full desktop.

I don't think Microsoft wanted users to use Metro and desktop UI at the same time.So I applaud MS is trying to give consumers the choice to do what they want with 1 OS.

To the folks who don't like tablets or touch interface, they probably could just stay with windows 7....but lets not kid ourselves, people will buy tablets eventually.

I will try to get you a picture Monday. I don't have dual-screen setup at home.

All I have to say is, once you go dual-screen, you don't go back.

    I tried this

Didn't work. I guess they changed the key. I am sure someone will find it. Or maybe someone wrote something for it already.

I ordered an Acer Iconia W500 tablet today for it. I'll post a review when I get it Monday or Tuesday.

I hope they added the ability to remove it and install your own. Or else they will have the same legal battle they had with IE a few years back.

While it is nice the Microsoft is offering choice, I still think they could have done a lot better job at integrating the two interfaces. For example, the internet explorers for each interface are totally different. Things like that make little sense and feel they didn't put enough time into designing a mor intuitive integration.

You can disable windows defender in windows 7.........which means you can disable this, as this is defender with antivirus/malware/spyware. I applaud them doing this.

You mean people have a problem with the interface when they use their PC and then IPad safari???????? If people don't a problem today, they won't have a problem in the future. Or even installing chrome, Firefox, etc.

So far, my biggest complaint is the lack of a metro app capable flash player. It's annoying that the people tab can show you videos, but you can't play them. It will come with time.

This thing is just amazing. Microsoft take my money already so I can officially have this thing for realsies!

Windows 8 is definitely a TABLET OS. It's clear that Microsoft is competing in the tablet field with the iPad. Windows 8 is NOT really a successor to Windows 7. wonder why Microsoft is confusing people because they are doing just that with the name.

It should be Windows Tablet 8 or something.

It's dual purpose. It runs fine on both my tablet and laptop. You don't need a touch base to get it working. True, you do lose out on some of the metro apps geared for touch, but most metro apps convert well. Heck, even cut the rope looks good without touch. Heck, half the time I use keyboard and mouse on my tablet and it just runs fine. Remember, it isn't just an iPad competitor (or successor if you ask me), it's a an apple family of products successor. Bigger picture here. It breaks the 3 screen rule.
