No question I'd take Melo. For next year only, I'd lean toward George, but Melo is locked in for more years. George is going to LA after next season so I'd hate giving up a 2020 pick for a guy who won't even be there then.

Both can opt out after next year.

Man things will get scary if Chris Paul & Carmelo resign for the max after next year. In a couple of years, the team will feature a 37 year old Chris Paul + a 38 year old Carmelo with each earning $46 million per year.....

I'm just curious, since it appears to me Paul George is not realistic and Melo is a long shot, if we don't get any other big names (which is a strong possibility), wouldn't it have been better to try and sign Chris Paul in free agency by just trading away one of the bigger salaries. I understand why they did it, can't have regrets when you're risking Chris Paul meeting with other teams and have him change his mind. But looking back now, if we just signed Paul and orchestrated trades?

We're getting somebody else without question. That's why we're doing all this. Morey knows he needs more to legitimately compete with warriors which is his intent

We will have another all star caliber player added to the team.

Nikola for Anderson on a shorter contract for $12mill ???

How in the H would that happen ??? I would give up first of him, always liked his game. Maybe magic have problems with him something ?

That's right. Melo would have a very good chance of resigning, though. That's the biggest difference between George and Melo. We know almost for sure that George would be gone within a year.

Why is Paul George certain to be unobtainable? The Rockets have Capela and there are teams interested in him.

With the trade exception created and MLE, I think trading for him made the most sense. The Rockets will use that TE.

I hate to say this but Capela to a 3rd team for a pick or good young prospect (I don't know who needs Capela) plus Gordon to a 3rd team for quite the haul then everything you get plus Anderson for George gets it done.

I don't like it, I don't like it at all, but its a possibility. I'd rather keep the depth at this point.

Use the exceptions to build depth.

I don't mind trading Capela for DJordon.

I would do that trade most likely.

I move Paul George to PF/SF and roll out a line up of..

    Paul/Harden/Ariza/George/DDAKOTA

You still have a large trade exception, the MLE and the BLE to work with.

You could possibly target Zaza and bring Hilario back.... and still have the TE to play with.... at 11 million it is a valuable chip.

Obviously I would want to keep EG, but it may not be possible and Ariza can play 3/4 where I have a need.

I heard CP3, Dwade, Lebron and Melo is trying to form a super team after the 2018 season.

My thinking as well (or is it hoping), but the dominoes must fall our way -- Hayward has to be picked by Boston.

I'm not so sure. I'm not trying to be argumentative here, but seriously, look at our assets, besides Capela there isn't enough to grab an all star caliber player. Teams that would covet Ariza and Gordon are looking to compete, and wouldn't give up an all star caliber player. A three team trade COULD work, but if those competing teams had that asset that the third team wants then they would be shopping it themselves. Like Boston, they wouldn't give up assets to orchestrate a 3 team trade that would land us Paul George for example.

I don't know; I guess Capela + Ariza + non-guarenteed salaries might get you something, but I think thats the best we can do.

Those that still think we have a chance at getting Paul George are delusional.

So you think signing Chris Paul and keeping both Beverley and Lou Williams was realistic from a playing time point of view?
What is the difference in trading away someone else? Those 2 guys are the ones who would lose the minutes. Also, staying OVER the cap allows us to use a much bigger MLE than being under it.

I figured if I started the post with "I'm just curious" then posters wouldn't be so quick to try get into an argument and simply satisfy my curiosity. And no, if you read my post properly I ended with "signed Paul and orchestrated trades" meaning I was asking what that could have led to, had we just signed CP and see what we could have gotten in the trade market for Bev, Dekker, Lou, and our first rounder.

Also, yes I know we would have had to get under the cap first and yes there is a risk that Paul changes his mind...again, just curious.
