Report: Patriots sack McGinest in cap-cutting move

All-time postseason sack leader Willie McGinest has reportedly been sacked by the New England Patriots.

An unnamed NFL personnel director told The Boston Globe that McGinest's name appeared on the list of veterans released after the Collective Bargaining Agreement extension was announced Wednesday night.

No major NFL cuts were officially announced Wednesday night.

The newspaper reports that although the Patriots weren't struggling to get under the $102 million cap, McGinest carried a cap figure of more than $7 million, which made him a target to be cut.

The Patriots would reportedly like to re-sign McGinest at a more palatable deal, but sources told the newspaper that the Cleveland Browns, San Diego Chargers, Dallas Cowboys and several other teams plan to make a run at signing him.

The 34-year-old McGinest, who has played 12 seasons with the Patriots, is third on the team's all-time sacks list with 78. He was second on the Patriots in the 2005 season with six and set a playoff record with 4½ sacks in the team's wild-card victory over the Jaguars. McGinest's 16 postseason sacks are the most in NFLhistory.

I can't see it happening. It would be nice though.

McG will return to the Pats. Absolutely. Positively. Maybe.

I agree. It would be really nice to have a guy like that to anchor your defense. Unfortunately, teams that want him are going to have to overspend for him. I don't see the Texans going after a 34 year old DL unless they think he's the immediate difference between them and the Super Bowl. After going 2-14, they need SO much help that I just don't think that they are going to throw all that money at one guy IMHO.

    He fits with a 3-4 better than a 4-3.
